Broken OBD2 port?

I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right section, but I'm having an issue my OBD2. It was working perfectly about a month ago. The last thing I did was flash mhd xph. The car I'm having an issue with this is an 08 335i. The port is no longer working or at least it only works when I push the actual connector with the odb cord plugged. It works if held at a certain spot, and I can confirm it is not a faulty cord because I have tried three of them. If anyone has a solution it would much appreciated

So in both cases the issue is a poor electrical connection at the OBD2 port.

In your shoes I'd unplug the battery and check the pins/receptacles at the port.

If nothing is apparent, then you'll have to pull the whole assembly out and look for any female contacts that have been pushed in beyond the restraining detent.

I see, thanks for your input Luckily I can still read codes, but that's about it

I've broken the ODB connector off its mount twice. The connector is not expensive, part number 61136954580

Unpinning the wires from the damaged connector can be a real challenge however. First, there is a gray locking piece that slides into the OBDII socket and has to be pulled out slightly to remove or insert the contacts. Then, getting the contacts out is really difficult without the proper tool. Use Lisle tool 56500 or the pin remover from the Schwaben electrical kit, tool CE-56,

Replacing the pins into the new connector is easy, they just slide in a click into place.

If you've got damaged pins, they can be cut off and replaced by crimping (part number 61138364519 or 61138366598)

My issue is that it isn't broken, or at least I didn't break it off. The port works if I move it while cord is plugged in. I haven't tried troubleshooting yet. I haven't bumped it or anything, it just stopped working efficiently randomly.

The procedure is still the same.

You have either pushed in pins or a broken retention clip.

Update on this, I still can't figure it out. If I plug in a K-DCAN cable the light on the cord goes on, but turns off in 30 seconds or so. I try to read codes via MHD, but it says no cable detected. I thought my port was bad, but when I try using a Carly adapter the lights stay on and I can read codes with it and even clear them. I tried a 2nd K-DCAN cord from bimmergeeks and I had the same issue with this cord just like the other one. Anyone know any reasons for this? I need the port to be working for smog and I also have to take off the tune

Had this issue, in my case the Carly adapter turned on but did not actually connect to the car.

It turned out that there was a broken pin pushed deep in the OBD port. A friend of mine had to disassemble the port and replace the broken pin. Problem solved (but it was absolutely a pain you-know-where).

Currently on my OBD port area. Whomever was running diagnostics pushed in the female pin and its now unable to be inserted without me holding it in a certain way to make a connection. Its rather more or less annoying and for the future, when im writing maps, it could suddenly lose connection and send my ecu into recovery mode.


Like stated above you need the correct tools to do this. Any idea how much it would cost to fix?

I'm not sure, my mechanic fixed it for me somehow. I have no idea what he did though. I forgot to ask him as I took it in for other work

Bump!

All of a sudden mine has started playing up, my BG cable was always plugged in was working fine Tuesday plug the phone in today and “no cable detected”

If someone could shed some light on this issue..?

I forgot to update this a long time ago, I took it to a shop last year and he fixed it. I forgot exactly what he did, but it began working again. I believe one of the pins went out or came loose and he repinned the port.
