Stripped threads in Alternator for Idler Pulley
So I messed up and way over torqued the Idler pulley on my 08 328i.
I don't really want to have to replace an otherwise perfectly good alternator, but I'm not sure if the pulley will run correctly with a helicoil. What would you guys recommend here? |

Helicoil

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

So if the threads are damaged, it means to cross-threaded the bolt when you installed the pulley. Over torqueing the bolt would have snapped it off and not damaged the threads in the alternator. Good news is the alternator can be removed and a helicoil installed on the bench rather than in the car.
The helicoil will hold just fine.
