Push the dealer to change it, as it should be changed before 50k as a regular maintenance. I got a used 335i not that long ago and according to the records plugs were changed around 49,460 miles.

If you go the DIY route I would probably suggest burger tuning as you can get the plug socket + 6 plugs for around 95$ (with shipping).

I got NGKs roughly a month ago for $60 and also got a good deal on BOSCH ignition coils ($230 for 6). So I paid $290 for what the dealer would try and charge you like $600 or more for.

Yeah thats absurd and some people have no choice and pay that much.

My coils looked good so therefore I did not change them yet. I havent shop around or anything but they are NOT cheap. Not sure how to tell when are bad unless misfires are present. So far i have none. My engine feels much smoother after changing plugs and cleaing vanos solenoids.

Both indie shops have good reputations and specialize in BMW (one also does Audi, MB too).

Just FYI.
Hi, mind telling me the names of the indy shops? Im from the same area.

I'm sitting in the waiting room of my dealer. Thinking that I'm in for an oil change my rep suggested replacing plugs; I'm at 40k. I passed on the $500. Cdn bill!

Plugs aren't difficult to change - but keep in mind if you are a first time DIYer that accessing stuff in a BMW engine bay is rough. You have to take apart so much stuff to get at this simple tasks you want to do. That's why they charge so much labor. At a parts store plugs will be under $100.

That being said, there's nothing overly complicated about what you need to do... just lots of steps - most of them sounding like "remove this cover, remove that screw, remove this cowl, finagle that harness..."

If you decide to take it on, give yourself lots of time and you'll be fine. I can have everything apart in 15mins after doing it 2-3 times.

check slickdeals.net and get an advanced auto coupon like the one listed here.
http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/1115...-40-off-100-or

I was able to get my NGK plugs for $50 or less (can't recall) about a year ago when I got my car at 43K and decided to change them on my own. I had to drive to a store that was a bit farther away to get them, but it was worth it, and took an hour of my time (working slowly as it was my first time with this car) to change them.

Now I live in CA and there's no Advanced Auto Parts…Kind bummed about that since none of the others do coupons like that.

You can still take advantage of the Advanced Auto coupons. They offer free shipping over a certain amount.

Dont know if this has been stated but i HIGHLY recommend the bms magnetic spark plug socket. You can also buy the ngk spark plugs from them for 11$ each.

Oh yeah I definitely can, just prefer local pickup for instant gratification

Bottom line the plugs were a great deal and I'll get my next set the same way but have to ship them instead.

I've had it with the stealership. They wanted $143 + tax for 6 plugs. Same thing on autohausaz.com for $55. Unbelievable.

It's interesting people would reply to a thread a year old, but I'll play.

Dealerships make huge profits off spark plug changes. A DIY for a non-BMW mechanic like myself would take 45 minutes max taking my time and double checking everything. A BMW mechanic could probably do it in 30 with the right tools, checks, going down their checklists, etc. The also charge double on the parts. I wouldn't be surprised if they charge 2 labor hours for a change.

If there's one item to learn to do yourself, it's the spark plugs (IMO even more important than oil as oil doesn't cause misfires/diagnoses problems). A 335i, you need to know how to change the plugs and coils yourself, or have a big wallet.

Do you recommend also replacing the spark plug wires?

Wow, you weren't kidding. I just looked it up and it's $38.99 shipped. I thought RockAuto was cheap at $11/plug...
