No its actually really easy to get of, 1- put in in neutral, 2- stand on the brake and pull the knob up and be very careful to not punch yourself in the head

DONT put it in neutral. Leave it in park and just pull straight up.

Like everyone said, just pull up VERY HARD.

It's very difficult the first time. But after a while, it gets to be really easy.

So when you say it gets to be easy, does the shifter start feeling loose after a while?

Thanks.

yeah that's my worry. I'm thinking of this myself.

and what's with neutral vs park? Any reason you suggest it has to be in neutral? Why stand on brake if you can use handbrake...? Also - leaving it in PARK will fix it in place...

OK just small update - removing it was much easier than i thought... I am either stronger than average or people writing about using full force overestimate how hard it sits.. or just on my car it came off easily than normal (robot at factory was tired I guess. )

So yeah, no worries just pull it slowly up. I just rested elbow on console and used that as lever pretty much. very easy.

Ive tried as hard as I can on my e92 and I cannot get it off. I pulled so hard that I was worried about damaging something. Maybe the 09s are different?

could be! I mean for me it really was ok. And it fits back snugly too though I bet if you do this a lot it will loosen up.

06 stick shape is different than 07 and i heard they dont retrofit. Therefore you might have a point about them being different inside too...

Ok, I have an '09 E93 and finally got this done. I tried the first method of sitting normally in the driver's seat and later passenger seat while trying to pull the knob up with car in park position. I nearly popped a blood vessel trying to do this. After resting and several unsuccessful attempts, I moved over to the passenger seat and kneeled on the seat facing the back of the car. I then gripped the knob using just my right hand like I would a baseball bat or tennis racket. I then just pulled up. BAM! The knob came out, although I banged my upper arm into the rearview mirror. Placed new knob in and done. I replaced the factory chrome with burl walnut knob from Tischer.

Despite everyone telling me to be careful not to punch myself in the forehead, my thumb did skin my forehead a little. That was in Park. If I had put it in Neutral, I'm sure I would have gotten a knot on my forehead
