I bet you guys got the exact same damper that is an off label BMW one. Vaico one is a bit different though. Vaico is made in Turkey. What did your box say?

FYI, Im going back and forth with PartsGeek trying to get a price match on the product I bought from them that they claimed was OEM only to find that the part I received was Febi branded. They are stonewalling me at the moment.

Now, granted we believe they are mostly made in the same plant, except maybe viaco... So... long story short.... buy the Febi from ECS... from what we have seen, this is a bmw part with the logo and part shaved off. It seems more substantial than the original stock from my 2010.

OR...the more preferred option...wait until the part from fluidampr is released...

For those of you that changed your damper AND haven't thrown it away yet, I'm investigating another option and really need to borrow a failed damper to get measurements. Thanks Omaha for the measurements you've already shown. I'm trying to understand the details at the hub where the damper attaches to crank.

Anyone willing to ship their scrap part to me? I'd pay the shipping.

still got mine... you think you want just the center hub? I think i can bash mine out..., that will save a ton on shipping and such. What are you thinking for the new option?

What's your option ATI for the 335i? I looked at that type my buddy is running one in his 1800hp Shelby.

More options are good, I don't ever knock the hustle. But fluidampr is the best diesel application. But that's just my 2c.

With 15 reports, an average or mean value is starting to be more meaningful.
Average=85,855 miles.
1 std deviation=19,674 miles

Not sure I would want to apply a full 3 std dev but I would say people with mean minus 1 std dev miles should be ready (85,855 -19,674=66,181 miles). Plus or minus 1 std dev is definitely main stream population.

PR's failure was quite early, based on the statistics. Petey went way past. It is interesting to note that those 2 extremes are symmetric about the mean of 85,855. PR is -35855 below and petey is +36144 above.

I called my dealership tech friend and he says they haven't done any HB replacements yet. I told him that it's a matter of time.

My guess, the use the A/C will have an impact. A car in a hot humid climate with a lot of city driving is likely to fail earlier.

I'm in the club now. I assume this is a DIY type of thing? PITA scale?
110k on the clock.
All stock
Earliest symptom was battery light.
Today I get a call from the wife that she thinks something's wrong with the steering. (told her she was crazy)
When she gets home there is a definite burning plastic smell in the garage.
awesome

Took the belly pan off and saw some plastic schmoo inside the crank pulley...scratched my head for a bit and realized the wife isn't crazy.

Easy to do. Remove the front intake snorkel. Remove the rad fan ( be careful with all the clips and you need to unscrew the heat exchanger from the bottom. You will need a belt tool (Lisle is cheap and easy, search) and will need a socket for the belt tensioner (I think it was a 27mm one). You will also need a tool to hold the flywheel from spinning, but it's a BMW specific tool, so will have to improvise.

I would suggest replacing both belts with brand new (they are cheap) and whatever you do, please do not buy anything buy Corteco made one. I just got a new one from Carondo in Deutschland (Berlin) off eBay and it's a beautiful original BMW off-label part. Great price on eBay. I can post pics. The Vaico one I got from ECS seems like it's going to fail soon, with PS groans and skips at high torque. Once removed I will post pics too.

PS: EDIT - hope you have female torx sockets and common mechanical skills (pre-requisite).

It is easy...you can do it. But learn from my mistakes

Definitely get (you can borrow) the belt remover/installer from orielly auto parts or other location. Doesnt have to be Lisle (I couldnt find one locally but other brands were identical)

Definitely use the flywheel access port to hold the crank in place with a screwdriver

You dont HAVE to use female torx sockets, I used a 6pt something or other...but I bought the torx sockets afterwards.

You dont HAVE to replace the belts, but of course its always recommended. (I didnt)

Fan comes out the top...but its helpful to have a 2nd set of hands to pull it out the top as you move things around it from the bottom to get it out clean. (you have to take that pan off the bottom obviously) If I remember right there was a wire or hose I was trying to go around, got frustrated...unclipped it and it came right out....should have done it earlier.

As for the brand....I purchased what was called brand "OEM" from partsgeeks.com, but it arrived in a Febi box.... \.. but it is clear: the part I got was from the same manufacturer as BMW OEM, but they had the logo and part number shaved off. Assuming that the part that came to me was ACTUALLY febi....(since it came in a Febi box) Febi sells the identical part BMW does. ECS sells Febi for 100 dollars cheaper than I got it... (I got robbed)

DEF do not pay the bmw price. If I had to do it tomorrow, Id be buying the Febi from ECS

I think it's the 12pt sockets that do the trick. Buy Harbor Freight has a set of impact ones for cheap.

Personally, I'm not convinced that Febi is the same as Corteco. From the limited number of pictures I have seen, they do seem to be different, but unless someone buys one from ECS, we would not know for sure. It also would be interesting to see anyone buy one from partsgeek and see what will be received. If they do indeed sell an off-label Corteco as "OEM" one that that may be a decent priced source.

I didnt mean to imply that I was unclear about how may points....its DEFINITELY 6pt sockets that will work to remove them, I dont know if its 10mm or 12mm... i even used an SAE one.....not sure which size that worked as well.. Though I did go to harbor freight and buy torx afterwards...I should have done that to start...they are cheap enough (has anyone looked at a set of those at Sears? Holy crap! them are snap on prices)

As for the HB itself....I DID buy the one from partsgeek and it is IDENTICAL to yours...including the area that is shaved off....and they have it listed as OEM.... but the package I got was a Febi box.... (they dont have Febi listed in their inventory as a product available)
