OK, the truth about mp3 on DVD

I have a 2008 335xi, with DVD and i-drive. pre-LCI. I have no cd changer; Logic 7 system .

I cannot seem to be able to play mp3's on DVD disks inserted in the DVD drive (where the navigation disk usually is).

The DVD drive does play mp3's on CD's, as does the top CD player.

Is this the case for Pre-LCI cars ?

Could not find a concise answer anywhere....
