Weird Oil Change questions
I just finished changing the oil in my 335xi today and noticed a couple things. I put the car on a lift and removed drain plug but all the oil didnt drain out.... I lowered it and opened filter cap and noticed it was still full of oil. I left the cap loose and reopened drain plug. All the oil still didnt drain out of the filter area. Anybody have any ideas? I replaced with 6x qts due to the excess. After driving shows maybe .25 qts low at most.
1. How to get all the oil out of the filter area? 2. Does the car ever say oil change required? Like my Acura does. Or is it only the the quick display when you start the car? Thanks for the help. |

The filter housing always has oil left in it. You can try to soak it up with lint free towels.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

you're never going to get ALL oil out of the engine, due to ledges on areas like the cylinder head and oil valleys, ect, if you want to you can use a CLEAN rag to soak up the little bit of oil left behind in the bottom of the filter canister, but its not really needed unless you changed the oil due to a contaminant (water, excessive gas, dirt, metal ect)

There is usually about 6 to 8 ounces of oil left in the filter housing. You should remove this oil using an absorbent towel, or suck it out using a turkey baster or a liquid extractor. The official BMW TIS oil change procedure says to open the oil filter cap first before removing the drain plug. I've tried oil changes both ways and I didn’t notice one method better than the other at reducing the amount of oil in the filter housing. Also, it is good to open the oil filler cap as well when draining the oil to allow air into the engine while the oil comes out the bottom.

The car fill notify you at start up that an oil change is required and I thing the triangle icon with a "!" in the middle will illuminate. In any case you can still navigate via the service menu and view the estimated remaining miles.
