Oil Filter Gasket Housing Procedure Question
Hey,
I'll be installing a new gasket tomorrow and had a quick question: I'm going to swap the left side radiator hose connector to a metal one so I will be disconnecting that for sure. Instead of draining some coolant from the bottom of the radiator or from the hose at the bottom side, can I just disconnect the two radiator hoses from the oil filter housing and just lose whatever coolant I do from there? I bought additional coolant to refill, but I don't understand why I have to drain a lot from the bottom...unless it's just a mess issue. Not sure if it matters, but I don't have an oil cooler. If I disconnect the coolant hoses first, would that prevent oil/coolant cross contamination? I don't plan on changing my oil as I just did a few thousand miles ago (no leak then). Is that an issue? I do have more to replace what I lose. Thanks |

Two coolant radiator hoses on the OFH? Is only one. I can't really follow your post but can tell you not to worry about any cross contamination. One you remove the oil filter very little oil will drop. Same with the coolant, almost none if Engine didn't run for a while.

Ive literally just finished doing this on mine today.
To get the oil filter housing off you will need to disconnect the coolant hose from the bottom left side, that gives you access to the torq bolt next to it. I lost a few hundred ML of coolant when I undid this hose, just have a towel ready underneath it. I had a litre of coolant and once back together it didn't take much topping up. The 2 oil lines will need to be removed from the bottom of the oil cooler as well, this drops a handful of oil out so be prepared for that. Remember O rings for the pipes you remove

Just re read your post.
1: I didn't drain any coolant from anywhere. 2: I did a full oil change. If your not going to, ensure its same oil you recently changed it with. Its only like adding a top up when car tells you so should be fine.

Don't waste time and effort draining anything beforehand, and as feuer said no need to detach the coolant hose. A little coolant will leak out when you seperate the housing, which you can then top off. Won't be much.

With the right tools (etorx spanner) you can do it without disconnecting that connection to the head.
Don't expect to get a torque wrench down there though. Just crack it with the spanner and finger the rest. You *can* get away with a twin hex spanner but depending on the quality, it is risky. |

Ehh yeah you kinda do. Unless you have a special E Torx box wrench. Or you can try a 8mm but you will most likely strip it, mine was stripping since it was pretty on tight.

Care to explain then? When I did the work the bolt is physically in the way. Unless it's different since I had a oil cooler but based on videos that bolt is the same wether of OFHG only or with the cooler to. I would like to know next time I do it.

Bolt is the same, whether oil cooler or not. If you are only doing OFH you don't have to remove the coolant flange and don't have to remove the oil cooler lines either. If you are doing the OTG you need to remove the oil lines first. Use the wrench from your photo.

Either way I think we've helped the guy out, regardless of popping the coolant hose or not

In my case it was stripping the head so I stopped immediately and took out the hose to fit an actual E torx socket. Maybe I'll get E torx socket next time I. Or just get that metal hose flange and replace the plastic one |

Hey,
I pulled off the job last week with no issues. Thanks again for all the help. The car is running great, but now I have white smoke coming out when cold and warm. It has been cold here lately (35c). I thought when cold it might just be condensation, but with it doing it while warm I think I might have an issue. The main problem is I did 3 things at once so I'm not sure where to begin troubleshooting: 1. replaced both primary oxygen sensors 2. oil filter gasket 3. downpipes to exhaust gaskets (both gaskets were toast and I had a major exhaust leak in both pipes) The smoke doesn't smell like coolant and I haven't lost any oil. The smoke doesn't have a particular oil or coolant smell..it just smells like exhaust... I still need to clean the oil off the motor to see if there is another leak. I wanted to wait until I made sure the car was running well before cleaning it. Here is log I took after all these repairs. Thanks https://datazap.me/u/savannahz/after...og=0&data=3-22 |
