Agreed, though I wouldn't say completely resolved. I wonder if anyone knows how much the actual hpfp part costs? I figure after warrenty I'll put a couple in a cabinet in the garage, just in case.

I can't believe that BMW has not figured this fuel pump situation out. At the very least they should switch manufacturers, I feel that would be exponentially cheaper for them than replacing thousands upon thousands under warranty.

I agree, between the fuel pump, and injector issues I had, they lost me as a customer. I had 4 HPFP two LPFP, and 7 injectors replaced, 1 out of warranty and it cost me $350 bucks. I'm loving my new 2011 S4 though!

Althought Audi has its share of "maintenance" issues I would be surprised to hear about a 5+ year fuel pump problem.

No long cranks have been observed and the vehicle has been driven hard numerous times in excess of 120 MPH, in hot and cold weather and on a 550 mile road trip. It may be that my vehicle was one of the last ones to roll off the line (4/10 build) with the old pump that caused problems. We will see what the future of this pump will be, I will update again at 10K miles.
thanks for the update -
are u at 10k yet.
and did u get the updated software?

I completely agree with you, I don't think it is simply the fuel pump or the brand of fuel pump but there are only so many parts in the fuel system of a car. By now I would have assumed they could have narrowed it down and fixed it.

I am a N54 owner and I thought N55 is supposed to be more efficient machine. I wish it is for all the N55 owners out there.

but I read some dyno reports and magazines that says N54 is actually more powerful. not by a lot, but still 6-10 hp. thats substantial. is that true? what do you N55 owners think about that? if i was one, i would be pissed at BMW... to make a new engine that is actually a bit weaker.

something that crossed my mind.

Anybody successfully own a 335 until 100,000 miles or even close without replacing a fuel pump or is it definitely going to fail at some point on all cars 07 and later?

Wonder if the F10 335i and F30 535i will have fuel pump issues, I believe they both have the N55. I'm sure hell will be raised once the new series start running into failing pumps.

As always, it started with longer cranks, then an unbelievably odd start where it idle surged, then dropped rpm's and I finally get the infamous half engine light. (see attachment!) I take it in and they read the code, yep; fuel pump failure! It is currently getting worked on and should have it back by next week. It is ridiculous that this problem hasn't been fixed after 4 years and a new engine! Just wanted to share...
That sucks!
Have the N54 and my pump was replaced at 30k miles #943. Now at 48k miles and no problems.

Add an '11 X5 N55 (November '10 build) to the HPFP fail list.
I posted on the X5 side but only received one response. This is the first time I've checked out the 3 series side of the house.
Ours started with a check engine light and no other associated symptoms like the hard or long starting. It was right at 10K miles, the SA said it was the HPFP, and "oh yeah, there is a recall as well". So all of it was done in a day and half, we got the car back and less than a week later, another check engine light.
This one was a valve in the fuel tank venting. It came on the morning before we were to leave on a 3000+ mile road trip (round trip). They got us in that day and fixed it.
And they a week into our road trip.... the 3rd check engine light.
I called our SA and he said it's okay to drive as long as it's just the amber/yellow check engine light and to bring it in when we get home. 13K miles and 3 check engine lights in less than 3k miles.

We love the X5, it replaced our '01 X5 that went 125K with very very few issues. That previous X5 was the reason we bought another one. I'll check to see of they put a part # on the paperwork for the HPFP swap.

Thanks for all the good information!

I wouldn't doubt if the guy didn't even know the recall was for the n54 only. Sounds to me like a lot of dealers are just changing the HPFP on the n55 because thats what they do with the n54.

Which is sad when everyone considers that to be a 1 in a million chance of happening. BMW hasn't done jack squat to resolve this issue for 4 years.

BMW has the mentality of "Just keep replacing the fuel pumps over and over, eventually they will trade the car in anyways, or hit the 100,000 mile warranty".

Just doing a search to see if anyone else has had fuel pump failures with the N55 engine. I have a 2011 335 M Sport sedan and had the fuel pump fail with only 2100 miles on the car. Prior to the fuel pump going out, I had already made three other trips to have the car serviced within the first month of getting it. One visit was for adaptive headlight malfunction, which occurred the very next day after I got the car! A week later, the Service Engine light came on and it turned out to that the tank venting valveneeded to be replaced. A week after that, the Service Engine light came on again - this time, they checked the purge valve. So four trips for service within the first month! The latest visit was fuel pump failure - the car went into limp mode and I was stranded at a shopping mall - couldn't make it back to work after lunch. This is my second 335 - my previous was a 2008 convertible - two fuel pump failures on that car before I got rid of it. Not sure if I should keep my 2011 sedan (it's a lease - my 2008 convertible was a purchase). I don't know what my options are of getting out of this sedan lease - only had it for 5 weeks.
