BMW Dealership: £2500 to fix all problems; a bad day!

Hi people,

Had my car BMW 2006 318i M Sport serviced today at BMW dealership, for Engine Oil & Microfilter. (done 73,000 miles)

Only to find out the car had more problems than I thought, if only I knew of the problems before buying the vehicle, I could have taken the price down ALOT more. Below are the list of problems..

But surely it's not worth anywhere near BMW quote; £2500 to fix everything!

- Vaccum Pump Leaking (Now I know where that burning oil is coming from, when in traffic/ stationary when I turn engine off)
- Rocker Cover Gasket Leaking

How much can I get the above fixed, wouldn't mind getting the parts & someone/or Indy close by to fix for a fee. (BM quoted: £800)

__

- Front/Rear Disc badly worn
- Front (lipped)/Rear Pads badly worn

This I knew of already, will soon get sorted. Will I need to replace any additional parts when fitting new brake discs/pads all around? e.g. wear sensor?

(BM quote: £750) - but that can be done for a lot less.

__

-Mid Silencer Broken apart inside - slight rattle (I noticed this when pulling away in 1st)

Again can this be done for a cheaper quote? (BM quote: £600)

& last but not least 1 of the rear tyres just on legal limit (1.6); £300 to get replaced, WHAT?!! lol. No way am I paying that much for 1 tyre.

Any help would be much appreciated, can't be paying BM's extortion prices.

about £180 for pads and disks all corners from carparts4less - textar. Max 3 hours labour at about £60/hour good indy? so £350-400 ish

Rocker cover, I had mine done at an independent I think for £160 but the 6 cylinders are a bit of a pain I recall.

No idea how much to sort vacuum pump but I'd guess £300 for the part from ECP, GSF

You could get four tyres for that price.

Liking that £160 price already; so for a 4 cylinder should be easier?

I know right, and this tyre they want to fit is the common 'Bridgestone RFT' - which you could get for about £150.

my memory is fading fast, but I recall having a leak from the vacuum pump on an e46 and I think it just needed the seal replaced not an entire unit. I remember it being fiddly but I'm pretty sure it was straight forward. Have a look for a DIY.

Rocker cover isn't complicated and they all leak in time so if it's just a weep I'd leave it.

You think a beginner with no experience (myself) can do a DIY like that 1st time properly? - that looks daunting.

As for the brakes there actually quite easy to do on a bmw with minimal tools needed, theres plenty of vids on youtube to show you how.
Once you have done one corner the rest will be fairly easy.

Run flat tyres usually pop up on the classifieds section for reasonable money.

Put a wanted thread up in there and im sure you will get some help

Thanks but forgot to mention that 1 RFT tyre is the last RFT on my vehicle, planning to swap that to a tubeless Hankook Ventus v12 evo, like I did with the other rear tyre.

& btw I have a staggered setup, what's the benefit of that? (if you know) & I prefer all my tyres to look the same, looks better on the car.

Yes I had a vacuum pump problem on my e46. It was because the previous owner never did rocker cover and oil started getting around. Was also in my cylinders! I have the seal to the e46 pump but yeah it's an easy fix. It's a pain to get out allocate a few hours for that but whilst your there you can do the rocker cover your self. It's really easy. It's just a long arse bit of rubber. Get brake cleaner. Clean the lot reapply and your done! And vacuum pump take it out. Buy a repair kit with sealant from fleabay. Apply it leave it over night and reassemble. Then using brake cleaner spray off any visible oil then after a few days of driving the smoking will cease. You can tell its bad if the smoke is there non stop after 5 minutes of driving!

Contact BW CHiptune mate. Those labour costs are a joke as are part costs.

He's local to you and I think would do that job for more like 800 rather than 2500...

Tell him Mega sent you!

Jesus I took my 318 to a specialist for an oil change on sat and he came back with the exact same list apart from the rocker cover gasket.the name of the place was prestige car services.had to get it recovered back to them today as when I was on the way home the low oil message came up on the idrive screen to top oil up opened the bonnet and oil all down the side of the engine and sitting on the tray at the bottom put some oil in drove to my sisters house 1 mile down the road and left it there till today, apparently it was a faulty oil seal so we will see how it is sorry about the long winded reply but thought it quite freaky how we need the same repairs and the name of the Indys also.

They do, well, the margins are far better at least. Most franchise dealers are around £70-80 an hour (Vauxhall, Ford etc), premium brands like BMW command closer to £100 maybe more. Plus the retail mark-up on parts.
That and the finance deals, particularly leasing, very margin rich.

Lol, nah is good to get some info from a fellow 318i

I'm guessing 318i prone to these problems; what's your mileage?
