PSA: Check your strut mounts/bump stops
2008 335XI with 83k, purchased at 80k. Went through a pot hole and bottomed out, than heard a bunch of rattling. Shock mounts and bump stop were disintegrated on passenger rear allowing for strut top to free float.
Bilstein B6 will take 2 weeks for delivery, O’Reillys for the save/temp fix with new mounting hardware and bump stops delivered to store next day. |

You live in the rust belt and the roads in Chicago are known to look like a patched up war zone.
I would replace all the shocks, struts & surrounding hardware. Bilstein B6 is a good choice. |

This is a good PSA. I had it happen much later in the cars life but still rusted completely through. The rears are not too hard to DIY yourself so any proactive DIY'ers here should really look into it. I'd coat the new parts in a anti-rust film too as from what I can tell the reason they fail is because moisture essentially gets trapped in the assembly.
