I recently acquired a 2007 e92 bmw 335i, was running perfect until the battery died one day, now I have the red steering lock indicator stuck on the dash, I've already replaced and registered the battery but the steering lock light won't go away & I cannot start the car, I've tried an ELV emulator but no luck, somebody please help, I am stuck.

I have an emulator but I'm still having trouble getting it to go away. Do I need to update the CAS module?

You need to clear the lock error counter with Tool32.
Or if Inpa allows you to ,do it with that.
Tool32 is more direct though.
It's described somewhere in that long thread.

"If you have completed this DIY (thanks yakev724) and still get that pesky yellow warning light, I found a way to clear it (credits to Micha from the German e60-forum.de). Apparently the ELV has an internal counter that causes the yellow (and red?) warning light to display. This counter can be reset using EDIABAS ToolSet32. The count is stored in the CAS and needs to be cleared in CAS and ELV. Load CAS.prg in ToolSet32 and run the commands "steuern_elvcounter_cas_loeschen" and "steuern_elvcounter_elv_loeschen".
This procedure may even unlock the locked steering column with red warning light, but I haven't had the red light since I performed the DIY. I'm assuming this because after my steering column was locked and I had towed my car to an indy shop, the mechanic was able to unlock it by "resetting" something.

BTW, this counter reset worked for me, but as with any advice you find on the Internet, you do this at your own risk. Bonjour ;-)"

How?

There's so much conflicting information. As far as I can tell there's no way to bypass the ELV via coding. I've seen a few people say it can be done, but I can't find any details on how to do it, just lots of reports of people trying without success.

You should be able to follow all the advice here and clear the counter first, ensuring it's actually cleared. Then install the emulator, but to do so you'll need to make sure you unlock the column first, key in ignition then disconnect the wire harness going to the ELV and connect it to the emulator before removing the key from the ignition. If your ELV is truly faulty and won't unlock the steering wheel, you'll need to remove it first before installing an emulator.

I will give this a try to tomorrow & let you know how it goes! Thank you all for your help

I've heard many things about this.

For example:

1. CAS downgrade to zusb: 9278746 (apparently no ELV.
2. CAS Update then reset counter with tool32.

Not tried either though so good luck

BMW 328Xi Lock out after new battery

Hello Joschc,

Did you ever resolve this issue?...(Hopefully by now!)

I have exactly the same problem on a 2007 after battery replacement- lockout out/ no ignition.

Could you assist ?

It’s the steering wheel lock that is stopping it.
See above, once triggered, the CAS module thinks there is an issue with it and prevents the car from starting.

You can reset the ELV with Tool 32 or the bimmergeeks protools app(easier and user friendly)

Not sure what your battery drain issue is, but your no start issue is from the wheel lock.

Yes, you can attach your own ground cable to the engine and the chassis to bypass the factory ground for testing.

Hello everyone was this issue resolved?

My 06 e90 has a yellow steering wheel on dash (with NO lock icon). Won’t even go into accessories. been stuck in the driveway for the past 4 weeks now.
Here are my attempts to fix it with no luck.

Ordered ELV emulator. Installed ELV emulator then still wouldn’t work. realised I need to reset counter using tool32 as Tool32 is the only software that can reset the timer without ignition on. Ordered a k-dcan cable and once arrived reset the counters. Hopped in car and still nothing… and I know the counters reset because I heard the car making a weird noise as soon as they reset.

Anyways 8 hours of trying everything and researching I’m now at a point where I need to update my CAS module

So I need to know how to properly do that and where I can find the right DATEN file. For 3 hours I was trying to find a clear answer and nothing anywhere.

Also which update is the one which disables the ELV altogether because my car already has its cas updated in 2012 #ZB 9147224
