Check the latch on the trunk lid and see if it closed. try opening it by popping the trunk lever in the trunk or on the driver side kick panel. if it doesn't work, try using a screwdriver to pop the latch open.

Also make sure that the bracket that the latch grabs is not loose. Sometimes the bolts will loosen up and it will move a little bit and cause it not to line up.

hey sara,

did you ever get this fixed. i think i am having the same problem.

i cant close the trunk consistently (without forcing the trunk down with both hands) and even when i get it closed, it automatically unlatches as soon as i drive off a bit.

also, i cant get the blinkers to flash once to confirm that the doors/trunk is locked tight.

You try the safety latch in the trunk, pull it

yeah, i tried that but it doesnt seem to do anything. i was expecting to feel some sort of resistance to release the trunk latch but i got nothing. i pulled on the handle and about 4 inches of wire came out with no resistance and it didnt seem to do anything. no "kerr chunk" noise that you normally hear when you unlock the door/trunk locks.

i havent been able to get my blinkers to flash (to confirm that all the doors/trunk is closed tightly). so even though the trunk is forced shut and i cannot open (without the key), the blinker still dont flash.

so the weird part is even after i have closed the trunk completely, once i start the car, put it in drive/reverse, as soon as i release the brake to coast for a few feet, i can hear the trunk "pop" and then the "open trunk" indicator is lit up on the dash. my girlfriend standing outside of the car when this happens can hear the "kerr chunk" noise as if i unlocked the trunk.

this can be consistently reproduced every time i put the car in drive or reverse and let it coast for a few feet.

any ideas?

the only similar problem i had was, sitting on my car keys while driving. and my trunk opens.

but, that's just my fault.

i definitely did not sit on or accidentally pressed any buttons on the key. in fact, i made sure of this buy removing the keys from my pocket and leaving it in the center console.

also, i did not accidentally leave another key in the trunk (i have comfort access).

I had a similar problem. There are two black plastic bolts on the underside of the trunk. Adjust them clockwise until you are able to completely close the trunk.

I had the same problem today. I opened the trunk, no issues. Later I got back in my car to drive off and I was told trunk was not closed. Before I hit the open button on the dash, I also got a left brake light error.

I couldnt see any issues with the lights though. WTF is going on?

I had a problem with my trunk unlocking and not closing. I called my service manager and she said this was a common problem due to the lock actuator. I had it replaced under warranty. Give your service dept a call.

Classic problem. My first trunk actuator failed in 2001 -- on my E39.

These things seem to fail about every four years (at least on my cars).

What he said! Lock actuator changed after 80,000 kms. Just one day before the warranty expired

I currently have the same problem right now. I can’t even latch my trunk like when I go to shut it the lock mechanism doesn’t even reach that little thing that latches onto above the bumper.
