Intro and Maintenance / Upgrade thread

Hi guys

thought I would stop in say hello. I've been watching the forums for quite a while and other members' threads on here have helped a lot with some maintenance work and advice of course.

Was very excited to see Duck's WR attempt and still keen to see Coupes and Tawf succeed in their attempts too.

I've had my SG E92 N54 for just over a year, coming from an E30, E46, and E90 beforehand. I've done lots of miles on all these cars and obviously despite some of the pain of owning them I do really enjoying the driving!

Maintenance so far:
VCG (Failure - DIY)
Vacuum lines swapped for silicon (PM - DIY)
Various cooling hoses and expansion tank (Failure and PM - DIY)
Water pump and thermostat (Failure - mechanic)
Lowbeam headlight (Failure - DIY)
Spark plugs (PM - DIY)

Upgrades:
RB PCV (DIY)
BMS OCC (DIY)
Wheels and tyres (Style 313 with XL tyres 235/35/19 & 275/30/19)

That's just a start... looking to keep in touch with the community here and also pick your brains (and pick up your part outs!

) from time to time for a few tasteful mods.

Would be great for a Sydney meet up and drive sometime soon.

Welcome to the forum mate. As you already stated you will find great advice and DIY tips as well as occasional part outs that you can save a lot of coin on.

I will have a few more attemps once i have resolved the fueling issue

A few questions...

Do we have a 'spotted' thread on this forum i.e. 'spotted so and so car or member'? What about a general chat thread?

And has anyone come across a Space Grey 335 with plates 101-AMG (LOL AMG I guess) ? Loud and burbly exhaust, very boosted!

Question for all you guys running oil catch cans - how often do you need to check the level and empty the captured oil? Is there some indicative mileage to check and drain the oil and what sort of oil level to expect?

Most BMS catch cans I've seen catch next to no oil, imo a waste of space in the engine bay.

Thanks guys... Then what's the point of them and why use them? Aren't they purportedly better than plumbing the blow by back into the crankcase?

The bms catch can attaches to the port where it vents when the cars under boost. The hose goes to the intake tract to generate vacuum. Because it's a weak vacuum any catch can has to be high flow not to impede the vacuum. Any high flow catch can will not catch much oil..

The vendors just sell a lot of FUD to get you to buy their products

So really a RB PCV valve with OE plumb back is good enough?

That and periodic walnut blasting keep everything in good shape.

Over the weekend gave the car a double foam wash and clean up, with a Banana Gloss coating to finish off.

Far from a real detail job but came out looking great in perfect time for the dusty rain showers

: That's the way it goes but I was very satisfied to see it clean!

Hi guys

been a bit quiet lately... very busy with work etc. as I'm sure you all are too.

Recently the under dash storage compartment opening mechanism went kaput so the lid flops down and remains open. I found the "spring" - the metal bar that controls the opener.

Compartment looks like this and is located lower dash, right of the steering wheel (RHD cars).

Anyone have any idea how to fix it? Appreciate any help / advice...

I spent hours trying to fix it
The closure mechanism is a bar and spring as you mentioned, so is pretty simple which means when the box wont stay shut, there's not much to work on
Easiest solution is to buy a new one
$65 - $80 posted on ebay

Socket yeah I spent a lot of time trying to fix it. I was thinking of jimmying up something for it to close with magnets, that is if I can find the right sized magnets and a way to secure them to the lip of the lid and the lip of the compartment.

I did have the same thing happen on my E46. It was the same type of mechanism. I did manage to rig it up to work again but the way I had done it, the spring bar wasn't in the original place so it took a lot of force to press the opener to open the lid. better than nothing.

that's too much! Best place to store keys or swipe cards (for car park access) etc.
