Since we are on this topic...
My car just hit 1800km... should I do an oil change right after the break-in periods (2000km?) and before I try pushing the engine?

btw, try going to different dealers for service, a lot of times the previous dealer forgot to reset the oil timer and when the next dealer service your car, they give you another oil change again.
Happened to me twice on my car

it seems that they don't have the service record of your vehicle if the work were done at another dealer. (i.e. no centralized database, each dealer keeps their own record)
That or they didn't bother to check the service history

Where did you go?

At BJ, I have been getting the free annual oil change even though I only drive 8 to 10 thousand km per year.

1-i wouldn't change the oil at 2,000 km. more like 8k or 10k, that's just me.
2-the dealership will cost you roughly $120 for an oil change. filters and oil cost approximately $80 so you're paying them $40 for the labour. it's not a bad deal if you think about it. at the very least, an oil change is going to cost you $80 if you do it yourself.
3-buy the bmw oil, 5w-30 sold at any dealer's part department. or if you can find the same oil somewhere else for less, but it wont be much.
4-yes you gotta change the filter
5-tranny = a condition in which a person identifies with a physical sex different from the one that they were born with.

I was told on several occasions before and when I picked my car up that they will change the oil once a year regardless of what the car says and mileage so you might try another dealership.

If you own the car, do the first oil change around 7000 km's. If you leased your car, don't waste your money and let the engine/service light come on.

AutoWest...When i mentioned this the service rep checked with the manager and they both said they had never heard of this being done before. Looks like someone's being a cheapass!

I thought BMW Canada will pay them back.. the stealership doesn't pay out of it's own pocket for customer's maintenance, ever.

It's possible that some dealers play by the book and others "bend" the rules a bit...

Anyways, looks like I'll find out in a few weeks as my car reaches the 1yr mark, with only 9000 km...

Be sure to keep us posted! I'd be curious (and probably a little pissed off) to hear if your results differ from mine.

I had mine in yesterday for its first oil change at 21,000 km. They said the computer indicated I could go another 12,000 km (said it checks the oil condition and measures driving conditions to estimate the required interval) but that I could do a "low mileage" oil change under covered maintenance because I've had the car for a year. I was also told by one of the SAs that the oil change intervals are probably alright for cars driven in Germany, but not for somewhere like Ottawa where the weather is a lot more extreme.

If it were my own car, I wouldn't feel comfortable going that long between oil changes: I'd do them every 7-8,000 km (3 times a year). But since this is a lease, I am not going to try to second guess their reasoning. Maybe BMW is just trying to save money by under-maintaining the cars, but it's also just possible that they know something about cars that I don't

It does make one think twice before buying a CPOed BMW with the intention of keeping int longer than 3 or 4 years, though.

BMW doesn't want their cars to last forever, because that's bad for business. I especially love how they tell us engine warm-up is not necessary. "Just redline the engine on a cold morning to warm it up!" Jk they didn't really say that, but I bet they wanted to.
