Valvetronic Motor Gasket for Magnesium Valve Cover E90
After replacing my oil filter housing gasket which used to puke oil, I still had an oil leak and a burning oil smell so I replaced my valve cover gasket this weekend. I saw some minor leaks all around, but once I had everything removed I quickly realized that the source of the burning oil smell was a small pool of oil from a leaky valvetronic motor gasket collecting on top of the valve cover.
I ordered my parts from Rock Auto and everything was fine except for the valvetronic motor gasket. This is a heads up for 2006 E90 (325i for sure) owners with the magnesium valve cover - the valvetronic gasket is different than the one for the plastic covers. The gasket for the magnesium covers doesn't have the outer two mounting holes or screws to hold it to the cover. It just presses inside the cover and is held in place by the two screws that hold the valvetronic motor in place. Last edited by lowrydr310; 07-18-2018 at 12:18 AM.. |

The top gasket is for the magnesium valve cover.
The bottom gasket is for the later model N52 with the plastic valve cover. The one for the magnesium cover just presses into place and is held there by the mounting screws for the valvetronic motor. The newer one looks like a better design with more rubber and extra screws to hold it securely to the valve cover (less likely to leak perhaps?) |
