Dilema over wheels

Hi Folks,

Recently bought a 58 plate 320i m sport. Had the car a week when I phoned my local BMW garage to ask if the car had any outstanding recalls well good call as they said yes it had a coil pack recall. So in I went got four coil packs free thought great when he said they do a safety check on all cars and that I had a cracked rear wheel at the cost of £534 inclusive of changing tyre over.
I told him not to bother as car was bought from local garage which they replaced.
Then I did my research to find the 225 alloys where prone to cracking. Wheels are 19". So have now decided to take the rft's off and replace, my question is though how many people have non rft's with 225 wheels and are problem free.
I know 19" wheels with low profile tyres is not the best.

It is a sorry reality that the 225's are prone to cracking, especially with run flats. Im not sure of what percentage of cars crack their wheels but moving away from run flats is probably a good move.

All I can say is good luck living with 19"s given the state of the roads around West Lothian area! Non-RFTs will certainly help, but it's just the lack of sidewall depth that'll still possibly give problems.

rG-tom, where did you get your 313 reps? Are they 19's too?

Its something I'm considering myself....

Its a tough one as the 225's and 230's look great on the E92!

Hopefully the Apollo's (when i get round to fitting them) will look so good that it makes the decision for me!

Thank's for the replys. The 313 reps look good, been looking at a few incl. csl reps but i find it hard to believe that a £500 set of wheels are made stronger than oem wheels.
So another question any cracking with 19" aftermarket wheels.
At the moment i don't enjoy the drive always thinking did i crack the wheel there. Apart from that the car us great.

I'm running 225M with non rft Vredstien Sessanta tyres. 235/35 up front and 265/30 rear

The ride is sooo much better - I believe the harder sidewalls to the run flat tyre were the main cause of the wheels cracking. That said I think my rears were replaced before I bought the car as they definitely don't look as corroded as the fronts around the hub.

Short answer is no - obviously any wheel can crack in the wrong circumstances - but in general yes the £500 reps (like most alloy wheels) don't just crack at the sight of a 2p sized hole in the road, whereas the particular BMW alloys with the issue actually do.

Sad but true.

they are 35 offset, conti cs5, 255/30/19, 225/35/19....i am moving to 265/30/19 and 235/35/19 Michelin Supersports though, with the JBD 255 is just not wide enough to get all the 350bhp and 520ish ft/lb of torque onto the tarmac

The ride was SIGNIFICANTLY improved over the 225 with RFT RE050A on, like enough that even my sister asked if i'd done something to the car when i gave her a lift somewhere.

When switching over to 19s and losing the RFT, are you able to remount the pressure sensors easily?

Thanks

UK cars don't have pressure sensors (TPMS) - they use the ABS wheel speed sensors to look for differences in rotational speed to detect a flat tyre.
