Washing Machine - Repair or Replace?

Our washing machine is about 9 years old and has never needed a repair. Has had plenty of use with two young kids in the house now aged 6 and 4. Now it seems to have a few faults, slight leak around door, issue with the selector knob in that it seems to stick and very loud noise when spinning. The later I imagine is the drum bearings.

Question is do we get someone to look about repairing it or turf it out and replace. I imagine with call out costs even to get someone to estimate costs if will involve a few £££s. My preference is probably to replace it but don't want to waste money if it ought to be fixed relatively economically.

what make is it? Our w/m (Bosch) lasted 15 years at which point it became uneconomic to repair. I was surprised how cheap it was to get a new one of decent quality £345 (Bosch WAE28469GB from Appliance World). Our repair guy advised to buy Bosch as he said the electronic items (which can be the most expensive to replace) are more reliable than other makes.

I guess it depends on how expensive the repair will be - I suspect you'll be facing a bill of £80 - £150 depending on what is wrong

Its a Hoover i think, I reckon I could get a similar replacement for £250ish, maybe a bit more if going for something like a Bosch. Just concerned that I spend £100 now then a bit more next time and still have an old machine in its later years.

Having said that would much rather put the cash into my new TV fund !!

Hoover aren't a premium make, so 9 years aint bad IMO.

Whining on spin could be worn motor brushes (£5) or dry bearings (i just oiled our motor bearings 5 years ago when I was told it needed a new motor, fine ever since)

Door seals are only a 20 quid or so and easy to fit, and the sticky selector could just need cleaning inside.

Unless you can DIY its the labour that will kill it.

Try here for parts, I get all our bits from there - great service and they seem to do every concievable part!!

Try running a load of soda crystals through it on a hot wash, bend the door back into shape and clean the selector knob thing. Ta da! Another 10 years!

A word of advice peeps. Modern biological low temperature detergents fuck these machines up at a rate of knots.

+1, all mouldy and full of gunge in the drum, and they rave about 'clean at 30degC' but in fact you need at least 60degC to properly kill bacteria / bed bugs / remove human grot and grime from towels and bed sheets - hmmm yummy....

30 or 40degC is just a nice warm shower for bugs to wash in before multiplying!!

We run empty 90deg washes every few weeks to try and keep it clean.

Also, re the door seal, if it will allow and its not split, just remove it clean in warm soapy water and put it back on rotated round 180deg, chances are it will seal again.

The main issue is the mega noisy drum when spinning, it is quite painful to be beside and certainly unpleasant for our Labrador!!

Not sure how easy sorting that problem is on a DIY basis because as said above, call out and labour will kill off the worth of the machine.

I've got a similar predicament with my dishwasher (8 yr old Bosch), very temperamental at the minute, a local guy came out to look at it. He gave me a top tip and after a couple of weeks (drying out) it started working again, he said if it happens again it's "XYZ" and not worth repairing. Didn't charge me but left his sticker on the machine for future business (he did live half a mile away if that perhaps helped!!).

I know I can get a new one for £300-400 (or even a new but damaged one from specialist places on eBay as it lives in a cupboard anyway for £150-200). Just biding my time at the minute and hoping it doesn't go completely tits-up on Christmas Eve.

True. My Mum's oven went pop just as she turned it on on Christmas Day once - she was in tears - and we were hungry. Can't remember what we did now but we managed to eat that day.

My wife had flu one Xmas and I was doing the cooking. I turned the Aga down on Xmas eve as I thought that it was running too hot. Needless to say on Xmas day it was too cool to cook anything. I was popular!

Pretty sure a 10 year old machine must be drinking power, buy a good quality one with an "A" power rating and it will save you money in the medium term plus the misses will be happy. Just don't give it to her for a Christmas present.

I did think buying a new one should give some level of savings in the longer term. Pretty sure we will replace. Saw a decent Hoover in Currys for 299 A energy 1400 spin and 8kg drum. Will take a look at others, they have some Bosch but the detergent drawer seemed very flimsy.

These appliances are now throw away items in my view. We go through washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers every 4/5 years or so. I tend to buy the extended warranties (provided they are cheap enough) and once they break down out of warranty I chuck away and replace, most of the time they simply are not economical to repair if paying yourself. In addition newer machines tend to be more energy efficient so upgrading will also save an element of energy costs. I would rarely pay more than £250-£300 for washing machine and £200 or so for a tumble dryer.

New Hoover washing machine bought today, being delivered Monday. £265 with 5 year parts warranty, should be a lot more economical than the old one.

Agree with above, these really are throw away items and at 9 years old it really wasn't worth starting to repair the old one. Looking forward to a much quieter machine.
Money saved by not going for a dearer washing machine will be going towards the much increasing TV budget requirement.

You may find a connection in these two statements.

We paid £345 for our Bosch machine. It has lasted 15 years of family use. No warranty bought.

I wouldn't doubt that, maybe my penny pinching costs me in the long term! However, with a family of five and a wife that has a philosophy of washing every item of clothing and bedding in sight on a daily basis (ok slight exaggeration), these appliances really do get a hammering.

One more idea - buying Bosch is certainly recommended, they have a seemingly well deserved reputation.

We bought a 2yr old Bosch off ebay as a temporary measure until I put in a fitted kitchen with integrated appliances. This was in 2004. The Bosch is still going strong.

They used to go for between £100-150 on ebay - only tricky bit is finding one locally, though they are frequently up for sale.

I'd do it again, no question. Good bits of kit.

I've been keeping my out on eBay too for a decent used local dishwasher. We (or rather the wife!!) plan to redo the kitchen in a couple of years so thought a lightly used one would tie us over. That's how I spotted the new ones which have gained a scratch or small dent during transit, with a 12 month warranty, for similar money so think I'll just do this. They're easy to view before commuting to buy. There's a big place in Bolton Ill try to visit soon and check them all out.

We had Bosch everything and after 13 years off trouble free service , We refitted the Kitchen and utility room and my Mate who is a Bosch accounts manager helped me secure a very decent discount, Most items are cheaper now than 13 yrs ago ,

When we bought our current house there was a land boundry issue the builder bent over and bought all our appliances and carpets fire place to keep us happy .

When I told my mate who works for Bosch that we had ben using it all for 13 yrs he advised us to buy the new products and also said most use approx half the energy and water now so factor the saving in to products manufactured around 1995 .

3 years on no extra warranty no issues quality wise I cant fault Bosch bloody love them.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Miele! Had various of these appliances in our house for years and years and they've been brilliant! Expensive, but I guess you get what you pay for!
