EGR thermostat, how to push it back together?

I just replaced a coolant pipe (heater return-hose connection, 11537802630) as it had a crack and was leaking in the usual spot and I separated the EGR thermostat (male from female) in the process of making more wiggle room. There wasn't enough room to pull it apart completely as other things got in the way. After I put everything back together and started topping up the coolant the EGR thermostat started leaking. It was very hard to push it back together and tbh I'm not sure it's all the way in.

Is there anything I should know about it to push it back together? I don't want to break something by forcing it.

It's E90 320D

Sorted.

The trick was to remove the O ring from the male and nest it into the female where it's supposed to be, that made it easier.

Also, there is a mark (don't know a proper name) that has to be lined up. Best to take it all apart and check how it is supposed to be lined up instead of trying to guess.
