This has happened to me both on my E39, very rarely, on my 1999 Grand Cherokee, and in the E93 a decent amount. All I have ever had to do is remember not to put it in completely, that slight angle change allows the gas to flow down smoother and not trip the sensor for all three cars. I'd say try doing that like someone else suggested first and see if they solves the issue.

ok this problem is getting on my nerves.
I thought the dealer fixed it when they replaced the "charcoal canister" but now the problem is back. When im at the pump I have to manually fill it up by keeping the nozzle pressed and shoving it straight in with an angle. if i dont do that it shuts off !! i can see the gas not draining fast enough! any help before my CPO is up??

I've had this problem with my car since day one.
Solution: Try rotating the nozzle little by little until it starts filling up. I've held it nearly upside down to fill my car up sometimes. When you get to the point where it starts filling up, hold it in that exact position and don't move it even a millimeter! Has anyone figured out why it does this? I have the N51 SULEV model, so I believe it could be fixed under warranty. That being said, I don't want to have to go through that trouble. |

I had this problem fixed before under CPO so i know its covered. They replaced a charcoal filter but the problem came back 3 months later. I took it to another dealer and they couldn't replicate it but i also noticed they didn't even try filling it up to test.

I have this same issue and it does not always happen as well. What I noticed when it did happen is if you did not pull the gas handle fully it would not reoccur. Normally I would not care but in a full service state it is annoying to catch the attendant before they take out the nozzle.

I have the same filling-up problem, but with a twist. As I'm filling up, a weird metallic whistle starts up, starting low and going up in pitch, when it hits a certain note, the pump shuts off and the whistle descends. It sounds like it is coming from under the car in the vicinity of the gas tank, and it makes filling up an exercise in zen. Changing the angel or position/depth of the nozzle doesn't affect the stoppage.
The same whistle is also audible when driving, with constant throttle the whistle ascends in pitch and volume until I either let off the pedal or push it down some more. Consistently returns. The best way i can describe is somewhere between a penny whistle and tinnitus. I have a video I can upload if any is interested or could possibly help. Skot |

My e93 does this a lot when it is cold outside. I can usually get it to work by turning the nozzle 35 degrees CW when filling up. Either that or use the second tab on the handle to fill slower.

I don't have the issue on my 335, but on my Infiniti FX, it happens all the time. The issue is a problem with the fill limit vent valve. It was such a big problem that they Infiniti had a TSB for it where they replaced the valve. Unfortunately I was outside of warranty by the time it started happening so I never had it done. It's intermittent and seems to happen at Costcos more often for some reason. But turning the nozzle sideways or upside down resolves it so it's not that big of a hassle.
I'd guess the issue on the 335 likely has something to do with that valve as well. |

Happens with my 335i a lot, different pumps and different stations... Several attendants (NJ is full service only) have told me it common with BMWs but I never had it looked at since it doesn't bother me that much

It's not always the pumps fault. I had the dealer replace the charcoal filter once and it fixed the problem BUT it still occurred on some pumps that don't play nice with my 335i

This happens with my 328 all the time. Yelling at the pump consistently failed me for about 6-7 months, so I came up with a solution that works for me. The filler neck points relatively far back (towards the trunk) on my car. I just pull my car excessively far forward for the pump, and which matches up the angle of the nozzle with the angle of my filler neck. While this works for me, I still cannot go to Fred Meyer (Kroger) gas stations. The pump will spurt out about ~.010 gallons per handle pull. I now only use Shell.

I have another take on this because it happens to me...
...on occasion. When the fuel tanks at a particular gas station are fairly full, they pump much faster as there's more pressure. That's when mine shuts off, so I set the pump hand at a slightly slower pace.

This issue never happens on my E92 328, but my company car is a '14 Ford Fusion and the pump stopping issue is severe and irritates the hell out of me. Same pumps with my car works fine, but on the Ford will take 7 hours to fill up since it keeps shutting off and raising my blood pressure.
I assumed it had something to do with Ford's silly no cap gas tanks. |

This always happens to me at the same gas station. I have no problems with any other gas stations. What I do is either insert the pump upside down or pull the nozzle out and listen for the hissing sound. Once the hiss stops, you insert the nozzle into the car and it should pump fine. If it still pops, do it again.

Mine does that on certain pumps at certain stations. I've noticed those pumps have a substantial rubber boot that seals around the filler cab. Sure that has a lot to do with it.

Gas Cap / Fuel Cap
I cannot get my cap off the car to refuel the car. I have tried to use a spanner on it as a lever and I have now broken the black cover off. Why has the cap seized onto the car and could the tank be airlocked? Any help appreciated. |

For the OP, it's not the pump it's your car. Have someone check the vent solenoid/purge valve. This allows air to exit the gas tank. I had this issue on another car; would not allow more than a couple of tenths/gallons before it the pump shut off. Turned out to be a $10 (GM) vent solenoid/valve in the rear wheel well, near the gas tank.

I've replaced fuel tanks for this, I've replaced filler necks for this and I've done countless charcoal canisters.
It's going to depend on your EVAP system. With the e9x its generally the canisters or the filler neck I believe. My e92 n54 has been doing it to haven't gotten around to fixing it yet though. I'll post up what I find |
