how hot should it run?

Hey, guys! Long time, no see. It looks like I've missed out on a boatload of activity.

Got a question. My temperature gauge after any significant time pushes well past halfway, up into the mid 200s. Think this is normal? Am I running too hot?

I COULD call the dealer. But why not start a forum and reconnect with you guys instead?

P.S. In case it isn't obvious, it's the twin-turbo engine.

normal for mine is around 240F

when I push it some it has gone up to 260F, but quickly drops to 240-250F range.

Ah, good. Have you ever taken it on a road trip? I'm wondering how hot it will get after a couple of hundred miles.

Only had my car for 3 weeks and it's mostly been city driving with limited highway for about 20min max. The temperature only seems to go higher than 240F when it's 87F or warmer outside or if you rev past 5k often. I wouldn't worry so much unless it goes into "limp home mode".

Mine normally maintains about 240F. I haven't seen it go over 250F yet.

Have you had yours on the open road for a while? That's when mine gets up past 240 or 250. It makes me a little queasy to see the needle get that high.

Also, on a really hot day, if I'm driving ... uh ... with enthusiasm

it can happen.

I have pushed it on a hotter day when it was around 87F and I have seen it go to 260F, I was trying to see if it would go even higher, but if you are not revving past 5k continuously then it goes back down to 240F...

My loaner 335i Automatic Sedan with no oil cooler was taken to the beach this past tuesday....temperature outside was 85 degrees

highway it remained arount 240-245...in the city stop and go it got up to like 260...

it's normal for turbo'ed cars to run hot...they are recycling exhaust gases after all...

I have an automatic

so I really don't spend too much time above 5k. I drive it in sport mode, typically, and spend most of time between 3k and 5k. It seems fine. I don't detect any problems at all. I guess it's just typical for them to run a bit toasty with the turbos and the squeezed-in engine compartment.

Speaking of spending most of your time around 5k, I love my car, but I'll never buy another one without the sport package.

Now I just need to figure out how soon it'll be financially feasible (or almost feasible

) to trade my 2007 for a car with the sport package and a manual.

It has one only if it came stock, because I haven't modified it at all.

I have a space gray 335i e92, and my oil temp gradually goes up to 220-230 and only rises to 240 if I'm running it really hot for a long period. But 240 shouldn't be a problem. Now 280-300 often IS a problem.

there was some production inconsistencies in the earlier batches...basically some 335i owner got shafted out of the oil cooler that should be there.

Do you have cooling fin/vents visible in your right inner front fender. Do a search to learn more. Its important for you to confirm. If you do not have said cooler, start bitchin at BMW corporate for yours. GL.

i think the e92s produced over the last few months had the numbers on the oil temp guage changed so that 225-240 is the 'norm'. i noticed it in a pic someone posted on one of the other threads.

not sure why it wasn't done like this in the first place which causes a scare in some people.

There are lots of threads dealing with the oil cooler situation. Here is one Got a call from BMWNA, oil cooler retrofit!

If you have the air to oil cooler I wouldn't worry about temperatures up to over 260F if it's hot outside. If I were tracking it, I wouldn't think twice about 280F. Above that?

Guys,

Thanks to all of you for the great info. I'm going to check my baby before work and see if I have signs of an oil cooler, then take appropriate action if not.

And yeah ... the instrument design is part of the problem. It shows 200 as a midpoint, so when you get significantly past that, it makes you worry, probably needlessly.

In my case, the thing that worries me is that it just seems to keep getting hotter over longer periods of driving. But maybe it's not even gotten to 260, so everything might be just fine and dandy.

Again, I appreciate you guys.

Next, I'll ask for dating advice like some guys I know on a Corvette forum. It's pretty hilarious, actually.
