You can smell it if you are running rich.

looks like i might have to start saving for turbo upgrade as well. I have just under 90k on her. I have a OCC in the mail now. Im also gonna swap out the plugs.

LOL seems like everyone has this problem..

including me. ever since i went catless, this white smoke comes out of my exhaust when my car is cold. it usually rushes out when i come to a stop. I just figured its cuz im catless and the secondary cats are still warming up. I have a valve cover leak as well though. but as soon as my car is warm, after like 5 min of driving, it stops so idk. everything else is fine so im just assuming its normal for ppl that are catless

My car randomly stopped smoking for the last couple days. My OCC is still in the mail.

Hello. That's pretty weird. It seems to me that a likely culprit might be a leaky master cylinder. Like coolant, brake fluid is primarily water and the common types of diaphragm pump run on vacuum drawn from the intake manifold. It could explain why so many folks who see this would only see it after hard braking and elevated engine rpms (so more cfm and intake vacuum.)

I'd guess it could only be a very minor leak or you'd notice the brakes failing. If my guess is worth anything you should be able to provoke the same symptoms by running in park at several thousand rpm *and* dropping anchor.

That's all I got.

anything new?... I
have the same issue after I went fully catless..do have a leaky oil filter housing, but dont know if that would cause the smoke..
hoping it has to do with leaky PVCs and not turbo seals.. :-(

my car started doing this recently after a hard run. car is fbo, had new turbos replaced 40k ago, wastegates are rattling, with windows down, car smells like oil time to time. bms occ is in, assuming turbo seals maybe? any insight from anyone would be great.

I'm having this issue as well FBO w/ OCC (going to install RB PCV soon)...have we found a fix yet? The smoke so annoying and embarrassing! I would rather not put my stock DP's on.

Edit: I couldn't find a source thread for my statement so I have removed it until I can sorry guys.

I think it might have build up water in my exhaust dampers which get's pushed out while braking and then vaporized. I'm not losing any oil and power is spot on. Also replaced my valve gasket recently.

I have the same problem probably even worse. Mine started as the op's did but now smokes all the time and more and more as I rev it. Thick whitish smoke cloud that smells. Can't quite explain what it smells like, kinda chemically. I replaced the PVC and thought it fixed the problem as the car was smoking much less hardly noticeable. A day or two later it started again and now a week after replacing the PVC it is worse than ever. I have a turner motorsports exhaust cat back and I believe it an active auto werks software or programmer. The inside of the exhaust is like the ops, black. Seems like a lot of people have the same problem. It would be really nice to figure this out. Has anyone figured the problem yet?

Seems like coolant seals at the turbo's. On acceleration exhaust pressurized the cooling system more than usual until you back off throttle and the excessive pressure pushes coolant back into exhaust system. Definitely looks like you're burning coolant though and it has to be coming from somewhere.

Detecting Co2 in the cooling system would be a start. My car does produce white condensation smoke but only at cold start. Once its at operating temp I see nothing from the tail pipe.

If you want to eliminate a blow head gasket as a possibility pull your spark plugs and look for one to look steam cleaned. You would know the one when you find it. If they all look the same its not the head gasket.

Put a spark plug in the tips of the exhaust and do this with all that extra fuel coming out.

Cool video but fuel will look black. Oil looks blue. Water or coolant looks white.

Has anyone fixed this issue? Please give an update if so. I'm having the same issue with my 335i 92K miles and catless. Plumes of white smoke coming off both exhausts on idle and smells of gas- it's embarrassing as people role down their window at a stop light and shout out something's wrong with my car. No coolant lose, oil consumption normal, turbo seems to work great, car performs great generally and no oil leaks anywhere. No check engine light or codes thrown.

Is this a case of leaking turbo seals? If so, can the seals be replaced or are we looking at replacing the turbos?

Thanks for any input.

Ok so mine smokes from when oil temp reaches 230f and stop when it's completely warmed up around 245. Really weird althought I hope this means it is not turbosas I would think if there was a leak it would leak at all temps. It smells like oil and something else but not sure what def not coolant as it is not sweet. I have found tons of people with the same problem and no one posts their fix. I found that rob beck makes a pcv for the one in the valve cover that can not be purchased without buying the complete valve cover from bmw. I bought this and will see if that helps.nif not it is still an upgrade over what people say is a pos stock pcv. I also replaced the valve cover a couple months ago and the other pcv but didn't seem to help much. I am hoping this works. I'll let you guys know what the outcome is.

After the RB PCV upgrade I've been smoke free

Nice. I did mine today brought it toothed shop a couple days ago and when I got it back it was pouring smoke like crazy. So thick that it stayed hovering overnthenhighway for about half mile back. I was scared and they said I needed turbos and valve cover gasket and oil stand gasket ( whatever that is) I'm assuming it is the oil filter housing. So today I installed the rb pcv and I had no smoke on a 20 mile highway drive. After sitting For an hour I started it and a good amount of smoke was coming out. I figured it would smoke from burning off the oil bc the shop said my exhaust was loaded with oil. Eventually most of the smoke went away. I'm hoping it getting better and I will update when I drive more. Everyone who has smoke coming out should do the pcv upgrade. Best $50 I ever spent. Fingers crossed...
