Staggered wheels on xdrive?

Would it be ok too run a staggered setup up on an awd car? I have a 2011 328i xdrive, and I'm looking at the e9x m3 wheels. I don't know the exact size but I know they're staggered.

I own your same car but with the M-sport package which came with the staggered set up. So yes, you can run staggered and it would be great. But what you SHOULD run is a 17" square set up. That's right 17". I could afford to replace all my wheels and tires with whatever is out there and I went with 17" square, Apex wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 tires. I HATE run flats. Despise run flats. If you get a flat, carry a spare, or carry a can of fix a flat, or drive on the damn rim for 500 miles, or set the whip on fire and jet pack away like a boss!

245/40ZR-17 tires - all the way around
Apex 17x8.5" ET40 Hyper Black APEX ARC-8 BMW - all the way around

and when your dumb sheet "friends" ask, "Why did you get 17s? You could of put 19s on that bitcch." You reply "Because I got 99 problems and a bittch aint one."

Can the stock rims hold the 245/40s?

Define "stock rims" - do you mean the stock rims currently on your car? 245/40 fit nicely on any 17" 8.5" wide ET40 wheel made for BMW.

The reason you were asked to define "stock rim" is because there are literally hundreds of wheels offered by BMW that can come standard on the 3 series depending on various packages/options.

You *appear* to be running style 284 wheels, which are 17x8 et34 square. 245 would not be the recommended tire size for an 8-inch wheel, though it could be used.

If you want to run 245/40, like previous post mentioned, pick up a set of Apex wheels, they have been trusted wheel manufacturers for BMW enthusiasts for quite a while. Or search the classified forum for gently used Genuine BMW wheels in 17x8.5 or 18x8.5

Running staggered is not going to spoil the driving behavior of the car but it will complicate maintenance (rear tires will be slightly more expensive and your setup will be non-rotatable, not to mention you will need to dial in your alignment)

Be sure to search around before changing tire sizes or wheel diameters… there is a thread on here that details the rotating diameter tolerance.

E60s run 245 on an 8" wheel factory from BMW surprisingly; 18x8 and 245/40/18 tire size

Interesting - is that on the rear axle for the RWD variants?

Certainly it's within range of what can safely be mounted on an 8"

Regarding OP, I believe you would encounter issues running 245/40 on 17s due to the change in rotational diameter, let me go dig that up [ EDIT : the issue is not with the new rotational diameter, rather the difference between front and rear axle ]

Long story short:

Staggered can be done on xDrive but your rotational diameter difference between front axle and rear axle must be kept to a minimum (1% or less is the commonly-referenced threshold).

Anything beyond that and you risk damage to your transfer case (multi-thousand dollar replacement cost).

The benefit gained from staggered setup is probably not worth it unless you have a specific application for its use.

E60, Its on the front axle for RWD and X-drive and rear axle for x-drive (rwd rears are 275/35/18 on 9")

FWIW, 3-series, X-Drive or not, should use ONLY staggered tires with 18'' and 19'' wheels. With 17'' wheels you can use both square and staggered tires.

Original sizes are shown in the pic below.

That's not what the sticker is indicating. It is only indicating the recommended tire pressure for the stock tire sizes that came on the cars, not the gospel for what works on the cars.

Square 17, 18, 19 all work perfectly fine. Same with staggered 17in.

I ran 245/40r18s on 18*8 wheels for a long time without issue.
my winter tires are still 245/40/18 on 18*8 wheels. 32 offset IIRC.
they work fine at stock xdrive height.
they will rub the front bumper a touch on big dips if you lower the car.
I also run staggered summer wheels, 225/40 255/35
so yes, all things are possible.

Yes, things are possible but not recommended. And here in Europe they are not even legal as we cannot use tires other from the recommended sizes.

Anyways, your car, your country, your choice.
