Hi all,

I just wanted to check something, can anyone who has a 330D whos going to do a bit of town driving reset their average MPG and see what they get from a shortish journey?

My 330d DRINKS with in town driving. That turbo really gulps down on diesel when it kicks in. Now go on the motorway, do 60-70mph, keeping the revs under 2k in 6th gear and you will get ridiculous mileage out of the car.

They really were built for motorway cruising and the occasional over taking as it's so effortless.

All I do is couple of miles back and forth everyday. 28-30mpg.

Thanks for the reply, any idea what MPG you was getting with the town driving.. I do 90% town driving and I literally get 21MPG lol.. I want to get a few people's figures so I get an accurate and realistic figure in mind to aim for.

Well my MPG clock can go from 29mpg to 34mpg with in town driving. On the motorway driving sensibly between 65-70mph I get 65mpg on flat roads and up to 75mpg on motorways that go a bit down hill (i usually lift my foot off the throttle). If I floor it for a bit doing 90-100mph, I bring it down to about 55mpg which is still good.

To be honest I don't believe the MPG meter. I reset the odometer to zero every time I fill up and see how many miles say £25 worth of diesel gets me etc.

All I know is driving in town kills the fuel.

I would get the car FULLY serviced, fuel filters etc. As you shouldn't be getting 21mpg. I never see below 29mpg in my car in town and that's keeping car under 3.5k revs with the occasional high rev moving away from traffic lights or whatever. My car has had the dpf deleted / egr blanked and stage 1 remapped by Avon Tuning, they also gave it my annual service at the same time, so I guess that's why.

Wow, thanks for that great write up it's appreciated! Is your car pre lci as mine is a 56 plate? I can't believe the figures your hitting on the motorway it's crazy, like I can get 53MPG but that's 60MPH in the left Lane :O

I had the oil changed just 2 thousand Miles ago and replaced the air filter myself.. and of course I've just took the EGR and intake manifold off to give it a good clean as well as removed the swirl flaps but still I'm hovering rock bottom 20's.. I think I need to pop into a BMW specialist if others can achieve that.. I'll wait for a few more replies and see how it goes because right now your driving a Prius compared to me haha

On a run I get 38-45mpg. I know my main thermostat needs changing as well as some glow plugs or control module.

I have a 330D LCI 2010 with 114K on the clock and full BMW service history

I drive 5 miles A roads and 30 miles motorway each day, total of 75 mile run

90% motorway mileage

Computer is saying 37 MPG and thats driving it around 70 - 90

When I fill up the range is showing 540 miles but really end up with 450 per tank

Don't think I've ever been at 60 on the motorway or seen 50 MPG

2011 LCI 330D, I get an average of 37mpg, mostly stop start traffic to and from work with short motorway stints. Get 32/30 around town.

Oh man Ditto! Activation issues on all 6 glow plugs haha.. yet it still starts fine and thermostats are gone on mine as well, I have both thermostats in the box from BMW I just haven't fitted them yet. I've just created a new thread, my turbo may be leaking oil.. Maybe that's contributing to my 21MPG and explain why so much oil leaked from the swirl flaps (I'm assuming in my head the oil leaks from turbo then makes it's way to EGR and intake manifold and them seeped out the swirl flaps?)

Thanks for your information beerglass again it's appreciated! That's some nice figures given your talking 70 - 90! If your even popping out to Tesco or something reset your average MPG and let me know what you get I may have just found out what's contributing to my poor MPG as I've found quite a bit of oil around the turbo which I've just created a thread about.. well you enjoy your fuel economy while I gets my hands covered in oil figuring out my 21MPG dilemma haha

You have an LCI so you should get more than my pre LCI but people even with pre LCI appear to get 29 -31 so again 30ish seems consistent LCI or not :/

Well.. after removing the EGR and intake manifold and removing the carbon (Swirl flaps deleted as well) the cars now doing worse!



It's now on 18.4 as I'm idling lol.. if it goes down anymore I may as well run a Lamborghini Gallardo lmao.

Even idling at 92 degrees now

Is that MPG reflected in your ACTUAL real life fuel consumption ? can't be right, surely ... reset the odometer, when the car says 30miles left in the tank, fill up twenty quid and see how far it gets you. I'll do the same at some point next week or so and report back how many miles I can get until my car reads 30miles left in the tank again.

I've not done it since the work i done mate but I usually top up £20 and get 70-80 miles (all town driving)

But I'd definitely like to compare by filling up £20 with 30 miles left to see what it's like

I noticed with mine that if you reset the average mpg counter and have hardly driven it anywhere but leave it to idle it will drop like a stone.

Reset it and drive your normal routine and see what it does over a few days.

The fact it's reaching 92 deg idling is irrelevant as with a stat that stuck it will just drop as soon as you start driving

The only was to work out your true mpg is to start and end with a full tank as thats the only way you know exactly how far you have been and how much juice you've used

Well I'll be using those PDF's you sent soon and have the thermostats changed.. that should help as one of them is definitely stuck open.. idling around town I can get 92+ but as soon as I drive it's back down to 80''s

Car should sit around 88c all the time if the thermostats are good.

Workout your actual MPG, brim the tank, drive until the light comes on, brim the tank and repeat a few times to get an average.

The OBC values can be changed to make the MPG readout say pretty much whatever you want. Mines about 5 mpg low, yours could also be wrong.

To be honest mate unless it's going to be 10mpg out (as I'm sitting at 18.3mpg - 18.9mpg) there's something really wrong. I've got an oil leak near the turbo as well, I'm just waitring to find someone who can have a look at it without trying to rip me off. I popped to a garage to get a litre of oil added and they also cleaned the oil off the bottom and "diagnosed" the problem.. I got to the garage and instead of seeing a £10 bill it was over £90. Thankfully I got it reimbursed but I'm treading carefully where I send it now.

Along with your thermostats being broken it could be that far off, it's ridiculous to me that you're basing bad MPG on a gauge that could be very inaccurate.

An oil leak wouldn't really effect MPG either, the car will run on oil if it's taking it in through the intake, if it's leaking out just keep it topped up. Anything actually to do with the Turbo it's usually too late by the time you notice the fault.

If you don't have the mechanical skill/time to diagnose things yourself it will get expensive pretty quickly, assuming by the fact you took it to a garage to add oil that it's the case. Unfortunately diagnosing a fault can take time, and they have to charge for that. A specialist might have a better idea where to start thus saving you money.

Get the thermostats changed, and then work out your MPG manually rather than via OBC. During this also get the oil leak fixed of course, but I doubt it's your issue.

Might be worth booking it in with a specialist and budgeting say £500 to get them to do the thermostats and diagnose/possibly fix the oil leak.

Hmm, if its in the 80's all the time its probably not that much of a problem?

I thought it was down in the 60's?
