DCT Transplant
So I'm not sure what made me think of this, but would it be possible to transplant a DCT transmission into an E90 335? Mechanically I really don't see any insurmountable obstacles & that the only real headaches would be minor fitment issues + the software.
Aesthetics aside (modifying the interior for the new shift knob, buttons for the DCT settings, replacement steering wheel) this sounds very possible. I know that my reasoning is very basic, but I was wondering if anyone has more knowledge on the compatibility of the DCT into an E90 335 + what the potential obstacles are. |

So software & fitment aren't problems, its a "how much is this gonna cost me?" Anybody know the going rate for a DCT?

New ones are almost 8 grand from Tischer. There was another thread about this not long ago. Not worth it imo.

Well the S65 V8 doesn't have TQ (less than a stock N54), the DCT in the 335is has illustrated that upping the power on the N54 platform won't turn the gears into mush. If I can find a used DCT (totalled/junked M3/135/335) then I'll start investigating more in-depth. I just like the benefits of the DCT -- Automatic when you want & shifts faster than a stick.

Actually it has shown MANY signs of weakness on both the 335is and the N55 335i models. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=dct+slipping

^^NO good, so its safe to assume that the DCT in the F10 M5/F12 M6 has been reinforced/upgraded in some way? The S63 has 500 ft/lbs of TQ stock, so I can't imagine that it's the exact same trans as in the M3s.

dude, stock autos are faster than most manual drives, arent they 100ms shifts or something insane like that?
dct isnt gonna be that much faster, and imho, the only benefit ud get is that 7th gear.

This is becoming more & more expensive and less & less beneficial as this goes on. An AT upgrade/rebuild is sounding a lot more reasonable and realitic.

How is it more realistic or reasonable when there is not a single upgraded automatic that has handled more power over a proven period of time than a stock automatic and the only upgrade available is criticized by anyone with knowledge about upgrading this automatic transmission?
