"road force" balancing
I searched and didn't find much on this. Is it worth $7/wheel? Is it extra difficult even if I caved and am putting (Conti) RFT back on?

If the tire is in balance after using conventional balancing then a road force machine balance will give no improvement. However, there is a better chance of getting a perfect balance the first time on a road force machine.

There's nothing worse than chasing down a poorly balanced wheel. Especially if you have to bring it back to the same shop each time ... because chances are the same guy who said "good enough" will say "not out of balance" the next time.

So, when balancing of any type, does it make any real difference if the weight is placed inside or outside? The guy told me he did me a favor to keep the outside clean/clear of weights. I would almost think it best to put 1/2 the weight on both sides to really get teh best balance.

Yeah, I'd stay away from that place .... weights should go inside. I don't think it makes a big diff for the balance of the wheel since it's rotational balance you're looking for. They have a name for side-to-side run-out, I just don't remember what it is. And that has to be extremely negligible or the wheel is bad.
If he thought he was doing something special he's used to doing trucks and low end cars all day. The weights should be taped too, with a piece of foil tape. Losing a weight at high speed can be dangerous to people following you. |

From a quick web search it looks like a very neat system, one that I've never seen this side of the pond.

Don't want to steal the post, but I'll piggyback and ask a question on the same topic...
Does anyone else have a metric shitload of weights on their wheels? I've got the 230's with RFT monitors intalled and the German BMW dealer that installed them slapped (what seems to me) a shitload of weights for balancing. I did drive the car on the Aurobahn, and balance seems fine, but wondering if the is normal. BTW, all wheels look the same. Sorry no pics. Car is in the US and I'm in Germany. Any replies appreciated, and again, sorry to the OP for stealing your thunder. Springer |

I just had one on each wheel, that I could see. They were all on the outside from the factory. They didn't seem to be very large, in comparison to some I have seen on other cars. |

You're kidding me! BMW puts weights on the outside rim. Even Lexus doesn't do this. Tell me the truth.
