[Speaker upgrade] - Need help deciding
One of the front door speakers is blown in my wife's 2007 E91. I know it's the speaker because i recently replaced the Business nav to CCC.
I could just order a replacement speaker somewhere, but i want to give her something special. She's been driving a 2001 Ford Fiesta for years, which eventually had more welding than steel on it. Although the name might suggest otherwise, this car was not fun to drive. You can imagine she treats the new BMW like it's her baby. Now, she's not an audiophyle, but then again she's not deaf either. The current sound system is base, there are no tweeters in the door. Gladen etc, are way out of budget, so is an amplifier. Budget cap would be around €250. I'm thinking of replacing the speakers, adding tweeters, and have come up with this shortlist: - ESX VS100C BMW: €189, no subs. 60w RMS, 120w MAX. Mid-range 10cm. Cannot find any reviews whatsoever. Which worries me. - MTX TX6.BMW €250, incl subs. 150w RMS, 450w MAX. Mid-range 10cm, subs 20cm. Extensive review here. Complains on how little the speakers weigh, but seems pleased on how they sound. Tweeters are not a snug fit. Seems almost too cheap for what's in the box? [update] These might also make it budget-wise. - MATCH MS83C-BMW1. 100w RMS / 200w MAX. Midrange 118mm, subs 20cm. €329, incl. subs. Link. Lol took me 15 min. to go over budget. [/update] Do any of you have experience with the brands / sets? Have i missed one to put on the shortlist? Which one would you get? Last edited by Knuppel; 10-10-2019 at 07:51 AM.. |

I have the Helix Match component door speaker set which i believe was US$250 and they are very good so I'm sure anything else by them would be outstanding for the price point as well.

Can't comment on the options you listed (I went with audio system drop in kit, discontinued a while back), but I'd suggest needing to upgrade further to truly make them sound decent (even if the second step is in the future).
The base radio speakers are so bad that the deck uses a factory eq to artificially boost low and high frequencies. With good speakers in place, that boost will make music sound unnatural. I suggest you either: - get an oem hifi or aftermarket amp, and code your car accordingly - get an aftermarket e90 specific deck (like eonon, xtrons, dynavin) which includes its own built in amp and can better drive the speakers; obviously this route gives you advanced features too like latest navigation, Bluetooth audio, video playback, etc. If budget is an issue you can do it in steps, but just be aware and plan accordingly.

I would put some coaxial in the doors, and done. Anything more expensive/elaborate will not sound much better due to unnatural EQ and lack of power. May not cost you more than EUR50 and results could be much improved!

or to add just a pair of tweeters to have some depth/space (inline cross-overs/capacitors required)...

Don't re-invent the wheel. Get the BMW IA speakers with the tweeters in the rear doors (sedan setup). The underneath seat subs I could see passing on those. There are better options
