maybe a silly question, but i have not been able to find an answer -

if you simply replace the battery, not registering,etc., will the car start and run...just not charge properly?

I need to replace the battery today, but getting the cable would be a few days away.

Yes, unless there is something else wrong.

In case you haven't found much, good info on battery replacement is here-

Yes, it will start and run just fine. Charging is fine also. I replaced my battery over 2 years ago with a Wal-Mart battery and didn't register it (wasn't aware of that at the time). I've monitored charging system voltage since then and everything appears to be completely normal.

My experience exactly except that I knew about the registration procedure but was too lazy to bother with it since the Autozone battery I put in had a good warranty. Two years plus later, no problems whatsoever despite the non-registration.

Just replaced my battery again. First time I went OEM from dealership for @$225 I think. This time went with the Walmart H8 battery. Found two formulas to figure out amp hours.

RC=reserve capacity

RC/2+16=AH

140/2+16=86AH

OR

RCx0.6=AH

140x0.6=84AH

I am going with 85AH if that is an option.

I think this stuff is based on temperatures anyway and what they are assuming with figuring out all of this is based on the temperature being 85f (?).

Battery capacity ratings are typically based on a design temperature of 25 deg C (77 deg F). Lower temperatures = lower capacity. Higher temperatures = higher capacity, but also shorter life.

Casca, Appendix B in NCS Expert only offers options for 80 and 90 AH AGM batteries. I tried a manual ADD for my 95 AH AGM battery but it wouldn't accept it.

Saw in Walmart the other day that they now has an H8 AGM, with 5 year free replacement. In my area it is $149.76! I think I'll try if my H8-MAXX takes a dump.
