Valve Lifters & Rockers

My wife's 2008 328xi with 47k miles on it had the engine start ticking. Took the car to BMW of Bridgeport, they informed me that they had a services bulletin regarding this issue and that they would go ahead and replace the valve lifters. They went ahead and performed the work, 5k miles later the sound came back. I brought the car back to the dealer and they told me that their is a new service bulletin for this issue where they replace the rockers. They went ahead and performed the work, got the car back yesterday.

I guess the new rockers have a tiny pin hole in them to relieve air pressure built up in the cylinder heads which attributed to the ticking sound.

Here is the interesting part.....The car is noticabley quicker, especially from 2k-4k RPM. It's a 6 speed manual. Does this make sense to anyone?

The ticking sound was never a huge deal to me until I read about it on the forum, then I figured I would take it in and see if they would fix it (worst comes to worst, I'll get a free valve cover gasket out of the deal and save myself the money down the road).

I guess long story short for all the NA'ers on the site is, if your shit is ticking, go get it fixed for free under your warranties (if you have them). My 2007 328i did the same thing before and I never knew about the service bulletin and never had it addressed (not that I cared because that one was a lease)

Maybe they just reset the adaptations.

Uh, no it was an actual design flaw in the older N52 motors. OCI has nothing to do with it.

My lifters and rockers were replaced. Ticking came back. Cylinder head was replaced.

Lifters and rockers is not going to solve the problem... The actuall fix is replacing the whole cyl head... I already went through the whole process under warranty and it all happened at around 25k miles... So hopefully u can get it all fixed b4 ur warranty expires unless u got CPO then ur covered

I had this problem before with my car when I first bought it and of course it worried me but after putting 91 and higher octane gas in it for about a month it just went away by itself, no more ticking. I have a third party warranty so if anything goes wrong with my car it's covered.

Carlos916 is right about the cylinder head replacement but at least you got the problem solved for now

Actually the levers and the lifters fix about 6 out of 10 of them from my experience. I have replaced about 20-25 sets of them. And quite often they do work.

Good to know.

I had my lifters changed but the issue persisted.

So the dealer replaced the cylinder head nearly a year ago. For the first few months the lifter noise went away, but for the past six months or so it's been back and just as bad as ever.

I'll have to check with my SA. Hopefully he'll be aware of the new SB.

Guys there is like a 100 page thread on this already. Let's keep this issue to that thread.
