paddles wired wrong

so i recently bought a 2009 bmw 328i that has the sport package. the car comes stock with paddles and the previous owner bought an aftermarket steering wheel and swapped the paddles from the oem steering wheel to the new one. In this process, i'm assuming, the wiring was messed up and now both of my paddles shift down when i pull them towards me. and neither of them shift up. when the paddle is pushed away from me, nothing happens. however, i can shift up with my shift knob and only up with it. I haven't looked into it at all but was wondering if anyone had any advice.

It sounds like:
1) your Previous owner swapped the functionality of the paddles. OEM = pull back to upshift. You can fix this by switching the plugs inside the steering wheel

2) the main issue effecting the upshift functionality (which effects both the paddles as well as your shifter) is most likely due to a broken wire in the harness. This harness is connected to the shifter underneath the center console trim piece. This is super common and you just need to get to the harness and fix whatever connection is broken

Tough to know what the previous owner did. My recommendation is find the newer style paddles and then do the following mod to them. I did this and it is a worthy upgrade:
