Adding Tweeters

I have the base audio system - 2 front speakers, 2 rear and 2 under seat subs.

Is it pretty straight forward to fit oem tweeters from bmw? Obviously I know I'll need the door mouldings and foam, but is it simple plug and play?

Also read somewhere you don't have to remove the whole door card to get at the front speakers for install?

Any help would be much appreciated guys. Cheers.

Have you thought about fitting the Alpine kit? With your car being a LCI everything will be plug and play.

I fitted it to my old e92 LCI, great upgrade and only took about half a day to do.

Definitely something to consider. Just trying to keep costs down at the moment, hence the tweeters being an ok upgrade for a cheap(ish) straight forward mod.

When I did my skin swop on my last E92 I ended up with holes in the rear cards, I bought some cheap tweeters just to fill the holes, whilst fitting them I thought I may as well wire them up and it was instantly better, I'd go for it

Can't remember from memory if there is a tweeter connection on the standard speaker. If there isn't then it wouldn't be too difficult to tap off the standard speaker wire to fit a tweeter. It would certainly lift the front end dramatically adding them.

Pretty sure you have to remove the doorcard as the speaker is held on with 3 bolts from behind

Does anybody know then if the factory tweeters can just plug into the standard front speakers?

Tweeters

This is an easy job. I did it on my old e92 and it made quite a difference, in fact I've also done it on my current e90. Much harder on the 90 as they are built in to the complete door surround.
Both cars, the tweeters are plug and play with the wiring simply plugging into an empty socket on the door speaker.
Don't be tempted to leave out the polystyrene moulds, as you'll get a lot of wind noise...

Cheers for the info guys, appreciated as always.

Think I'll look at the tweeter upgrade initially.

The OEM tweeter from BMW cost only £50 for the pair.
I appreciate it will not sound good as alpine upgrade.
But is the alpine worth the extra £350 who like myself just listens to Capital FM

Am I right in thinking I can get away with fitting the tweeter and plugging it in without removing the door card completely?

No, You will still need to remove the door card to connect tweeter connector to the door speaker.

It's possible if I remember rightly - have a look through the audio threads I seem to remember posting my experiences of doing it in there. It was ages ago, but I think you may be able to leave part of the door card attached, there's a small yellow plug which just slots into the existing speaker connection, very easy to do.

The most annoying bit was carving up the existing foam moulds - for the sake of £16 I wish I'd just ordered the pre-prepped tweeter versions!

Be wary of the light connections and the bottom of the door, mine were an absolute pain to remove (to get the door card off completely) I gave up at one point for fear of breaking it, and just propped up the card door with it still attached...

Cheers mate, fortunately I ordered the foam inserts as well with the tweeters and pods. Just hoping I can pull the door cards back enough to plug them in without having to remove it completely.

Tbf buddy the door cards are pretty easy to remove and refit etc and I'd probably be more inclined to pull it out the way than risk breaking something trying to just pull the top corner back.

All done. Was a little fiddly but managed in a hour.

Sound quality is definitely more clear now, well worth doing for anybody missing tweeters.

I'm about to add tweeters, I also have the base system. Can someone tell me where I can get grills like that? The audio shop was originally suggested flush mounted tweeters, but Id' much rather have these stock looking mesh grills. And I don't want the ones that say "Harmon Kardon"

Available from the dealers or try Ebay. They're the stock ones.
