I've counted at least 6-8 installs across all boards, not including E90Post, with the majority DIY. All DIYs (at least 5) worked as soon as they attached their ipods without going to dealer. All had MP3 capable systems either as built or via PROGMAN upgrade. The oldest was a 01/05 build e63.

If the DIYs had a CD changer, it would already be coded for CD. However, there are changes in the car's sw that were made in 22.02.01 specifically for iPod so if the car is not brought up to the newest PROGMAN and also coded it is my understanding that some things won't work "right". Of course, in some cases this might be almost imperceptible.

Your right, I should have included that all had the 6CDC and removed it. Only two ( so far) actually got the correct cover to plug the hole.

I saw the 22.02 release for E90 but not yet for E60/63. probably in dealer hands but SIB not released yet.

Devil is in the details people say.

I would wager that it won't work perfectly w/o the sw.

Is that true for non-IDrive cars?

My frustration is that I can buy the unit (already did) but none of the dealers in the SD area are up to speed on the install to the point that they will do the work. Harloff is where I'd prefer to get the work done, but they can't say for sure it will work properly. The service manager there has quoted me 1.5 hrs. labor to install (perfectly acceptable), but then adds I may have to pay for software "upgrades" that an internal bulletin claims MAY be necessary (totally UNacceptable) and are NOT billable as warranty work, again unacceptable.

It's not like this car is ancient - it's less than one year old. BMW sold me a product that falls within the advertised range of build dates for compatibility that REQUIRES dealer coding. If the software is not up to date that should be included as part of the accessory purchase. I know the build date of my car and progman version but they still cannot say whether or not the coding will work for sure. I don't understand that.

I'm willing to pay for install labor, but paying for progman updates to get it to work is

I got my car back from Long Beach BMW today and got my non-Idrive Ipod adapter installed. They should have some more in stock since I am pretty sure I got the first one done there. Good job and no squeeks or rattles present...everything seems super solid.

Also, for you people trying to get your dealership to get the adapters...call the part departments and give them the part numbers and tell them to order it. When it comes in and they call you, tell them you want it installed...easy enough, right?

Indeed. My friend just installed his MOST iPod adapter in his E60 M5. It also sounds like it was a much, much easier installation. He DIY'd and no software upgrade needed, AFAIK.

See pics here.

As soon as i took delivery of my car, i got sent to Iraq. (thats why a dumbass question). Thanks everyone.
you can use the aux...the reason we all want this is that you can now control the ipod through the steering wheel controls and via idrive, and have song titles on the screen. so you dont have to look down at your ipod while driving and fool around like that.

no worries, LED
I agree completely re quality varying but my dealer was nice to me and performed more than competently before I became a famous writer

Just a small update on the PROGMAN update,I experience almost no boot time with it I just go open the car with my CA start her up and the iDrive is ready to go. Ohh and the Legal trash screen does go away after about 2-3 seconds! That is by far the best thing BMW has ever done, has anyone even read taht screen? Anyway, im also new to iDrive and this is my first car with it and I must say I love it already! except for the Nav, that needs some work. But i can call POIs straight from the directory if that means anything.

I second this, but with people getting quoted over $400 for this in Canada, I really glad I bought the monster cable option posted in the other DIY for 50$.

Hey JSpira:

Are you still able to manipulate the ipod using it's own interface while it's plugged into your Car? Is the cord long enough to open the glove box and manipulate the ipods controls while you're sitting in the passenger seat?

I don't have i-drive and right now (with the whole monster cable, aux thing) my passengers enjoy playing DJ while I drive.

Thanks for the info.
