About the TIRE insurance from BMW
Hey guys...so...I was just told by my dad that he got TIRE insurance. He paid 800 bucks ( i dunno why he did) for tire insurance. Do you guys know what this entails? What is BMW TIRE insurance? all i know is that they replace tires if they get punctured... anything?
Is there a loophole around this system where i can get a free set of new tires... lets say someone slashes my tires...would BMW cover that?? LET ME KNOW!!

Do, or do not. There is no 'try'.

Wheel and tire insurance is NOT from BMW. It is from a 3rd party that the BMW dealers sell. I just purchased wheel and tire insurance when I picked up my 335xi last week. They initially asked $400 for it and I talked them down to $350. I got the exact same product for my wife's Acura MDX and it was ~$300. The difference is likely due to the RFT on the bimmer.
The great thing about the insurance is that is covers whatever 4 wheels and tires that are on the car. The OEM 18"s, my 17" snows etc. It will repair or replace the the tire as long as there is 2/32" of tread left. They will repair or replace the rim if there is damage from a pot hole etc.... If I have to replace one rear, I basically break even and come out ahead if I have to replace 2 tires or damage one wheel. Just my 2 cents

also you get 4k in claims over 5 years i think. so basically 4 sets of wheels. you pay the 1.1k upfront for a set of tires, mounting and balancing, etc. the 3rd party refunds you 1k back and you pay for alignment approx 100 dollars.
at least from my experience it has been this way. my last claim for some reason hasnt given me back the 1k... very slow. and i have to contact them soon.

Mine cost $390, covers 5 years, 75k, max total of all claims 3k. I figure just one new tire would almost break even. Then again, in driving 10 years on my old car, I never got a flat. That's why these "protection package" companies do make money, they can spread out the risk.
Like the Harvard economics professor said, never buy these packages. They play on human emotion and desire to rid themselves of risk, even at mathematically unsound probability. Still, I say the $390 didn't take into account that a RE050A RFT costs what it does. my .02.... Also, it says to take the vehicle to the selling dealership when possible, as they will be familiar with the claims process and will handle everything for you. When not possible, it says the protection package co. will pay the repair shop via credit card. |

When I picked up my car last night the finance mgr tried to sell me the Tire/Wheel protection for $950. I can't believe there is such a big difference in price! I'm glad I didn't take it.

I paid $799 Cdn, $100 discount. I made a claim by bringing my flat tire Bridgestone RFT and was replaced in a day. I just signed the paperworks and I was told they have a couple of insurance, one was from a 3rd party and mine which is from BMW. They priced the one tire including labor $635 something. Although I know I can get them $400 something here in Canada but I'm glad I have the insurance. It covers my winter RFTs too. If not for the RFTs I wouldn't buy it.
The challenge here is if the tires are not available (especially if a non-blizzak winter tires), you have to wait for it until they get it. I have Pirellis 240 sotozero 18s which they don't carry. For stock set up RFTs bridgestone, I've heard sometimes they will take from one of the tires of their new in stock cars to avoid the wait. |
