Bimmer Performance Center Built M57 Thread

We asked the company that we worked with to build this torque converter to have a stall that's a little higher than stock. We don't know where peak torque is going to be but we can remove the torque converter and send it back to them to get it fine tuned later. This will be a little trial and error on this part but no one has done this before, we are trying something new that has yet to be done. This is one of the awesome things that we can explore so that we can help others in the future. Breaking new ground and going into the unknown is something we love here. We like to break away from the cookie cutter molds and companies that just copy each other. We do this for the enthusiasts who want to go faster and beyond.

All I can say is keep following along and I will do the best to answer questions to the best of my knowledge.

Will you be using anything from the 6R80 or is that trans too different to use anything from?

That'll probably be the easiest but I know that the 6R80 was based off this trans and they have full billet parts for the 6R80. 6R has also recently been 7.70s in the 1/4 so it can hold the power.

Aren't those metal reinforcements for the exhaust manifold supposed to go on the bottom? Yours are on the top and i thought crap! i put mine on wrong but i went thru a bunch of m57 photos and they're all on the bottom

From the photos I have of my engine swap, I definitely had the reinforcements up top. I want to say I had some for the bottom as well but I dont have any photos that show the bottom of the exhaust manifold that I can reference.

BPC keep up the great work!! I know it is sometimes difficult to warrant the R&D on such a unique platform however this is truly an achievement. Please keep pushing this platform to its limits, its amazing to watch the leaps and bounds in power that the M57 has made in a couple short years. Very excited to hear your results and opinions on the upgraded converter in particular.

One photo is from TIS and the other is from the e90 diesel forum here. I had forgotten to put them on and went to do it with the turbo's already on. Its difficult to install them from the bottom but doable. It looks impossible to do on top without removing the small turbo but if you're removing the manifold, you're probably removing the turbo's too.

The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure I had them up top and on the bottom (which seems to be confirmed by your photos). I had my engine out when I swapped the manifold and turbos over to the new one, so it wasnt an issue getting those reinforcements off for me.

What's the highest power level BPC has pushed a M57 prior to this build?

I think it was Rob’s car before the engine let go. I believe max dyno was 515whp and his fastest trap was 117-118mph with meth. He also did 145 in the 1/2 mile.

Haven’t heard of any BPC cars making more than Rob’s.

There always is.

I’ve seen pics of the damage, looks like something forced the piston down when it was going up. Maybe meth percentage was too high, or spraying meth too soon, a hardware failure etc. we’ll never know.

From what’s been posted or shared, it looks like most of the M57 failures have been a result of meth, more specifically spraying meth off boost reference alone resulting in too much meth injecting too soon in the rpm range.

Of course, there has been a lot of blown M57’s that haven’t been shared publicly. There are a few rumors about a well known and publicized car going through 3-4 M57’s in a VERY short period of time. So, there are always stories, comments, lies, secrets etc.

Meth is a dangerous drug, lol. In engines, it breaks pistons if overdone. In people, it breaks teeth if overdone, haha.

But yeah, flowing by boost alone means you are pushing the same meth volume without regard to mass air flow. With rpm or maf input it should be safer because you flow less at lower rpm but get the same ratio of meth to airflow.
