I did an install on my 2009 E93 and in stead of opening/removing the ECU, I routed the piezo buzzer wire from the glovebox to the drivers side footwell, and from there its an easy way through the firewall by punching the rubber boot that ends up by the fuel pump in the front. Seemed waay easier to me, just had to extend the buzzer wire a bit.

There a number of other wires exiting the box, the same path can be used.

Have not installed, but can confirm that the route through the ECU box as they show does not impede the ECU fan.
