Any high mileage N57 owners here?
Hi guys, I'm looking to buy my friends LCI 3.0d from the end of 2008. It has 180 kW(standard measurement unit where I live, i belive its 240hp) and around 180k miles. The car is in mint condition, took the car for the test drive, everything works as it should and car feels like new. Even on cold start it's really quiet. I have owned 2 e39 with the old m57d30 engines, which never had any timing chain problems. I know that BMW claims it to be lifelong timing chain but I have heard of some chains get stretched. Has anyone had problems with N57 3.0d on E9x in this forum - if so then at what mileage.
Sorry if anything here didn't make any sense - English isn't my first language and I haven't written a thread or somekind of post in a while |

I’ve had mine 30k miles now and it’s on 88,000 so not high miles, but has been good in that time.
Had two wheel speed sensors and removed the intake flaps due to a error code. The intake was pretty clean tbh. |

Thanks for your answer Thinking of taking it to my local BMW dealer for used car check up but im not sure wether they check the timing chain and harmonic balancer or not. Maybe they only check the chassis and engine for leaks

Check out this thread for pure mileage on some of these diesels:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1080626 Keep in mind though that a lot of these forum members no longer contribute here, so its very possible the numbers are higher. As to your chain worries, I'm on 93k miles myself with no issues at the moment. From what I've seen, its not a big issue nor am I concerned about it. If anything, I'd be more concerned about the plastic chain guides but they look fine the last time inspected them. |

Mine has 155k, bought it with 30k in 2013.
Did the CBU clean at 100k, then again just now (as I did deletes might as well make her clean) Other than brakes, bearings type stuff (and emissions) she has been solid and never left me stranded. |

Alright, thanks guys, went to a test drive in a another vehicle, has 140k miles on it, still felt good - idle was smooth, gearbox worked good, paint job was nice - no scratches and original thickness. Going to check out its service history and chassis in my local BMW dealer - if everything works out fine then im gonna buy this one. Better options aswell compared to the one my friend has. Im gonna put list of options here - do you see any extras that i should be worried about. But here goes the list :

My 2010 X5 35d currently has 122k miles on it. The high pressure EGR was removed at 76k miles. A recent ISTA intake soot test confirmed minimal CBU. Other than a bad injector due to crack plastics leaking water, no major/costly issues.

Own an 330d lci 09/2009 manual e91 rwd, got 160k miles. Probably put down 30k miles so far. One abs sensor that went out and side mirror got lose. Now the passage mirror doing the same Going to glue it back to the rubber (heatpad) for the glass.
Service: Changed rear brakes (handbrake and disc). Oil changes! What going to be done this year :/ (headache) Oil + filter fuel filter air filter cabin filter Serpentine Belt diff + trans oil EGR and intake cleaning (carbon build up) Rear strut is leaking Window washer fluid reservoir is leaking (thought i fixed it last week, really hard to find where the leak is, think i have to remove the whole reservoir) Love the car, just a lot of small shit that is constantly going bad. EDIT: rear tires are bald |

Delete and go ecu tune 2+.
At 147k kms (2012 x5d), ive done thermostat and water pump, belts and pulleys, glow plug control module, tranny + diffs + tc oil changes. (Just did near 1,000 kms on a tank on highway driving with plenty of fast lane pulls, 26 mpg per bc.) Next is vcg and then harmonic balancer. Seems to be making whining noise. Maybe deletes since Ontario scrapped the drive clean emissions testing program... Cheers |

Thanks for the answer guys, been driving mine for 2 weeks. Gearbox oil pan was leaking although previous owner said the oil was changed. Altough it was changed, the person who did it was a monkey. He over-tightened the bolts and the seal had died. So I had to get it done, all in total 150 €. Found out that wishbones in front are going abit soft- everything else works like a charm... Although getting swirlflaps error code - might it be from carbon buildup or they are just going wonky?
All the best |
