From little acorns ...

Managed to get some plans scanned in from the M3 Brochure

Now, I just need to find a few weeks ... but it is a start. Setup, to scale.

Let's see how this develops.

I've just setup the plans (to real scale) in my 3D software and will start to model a E92 M3. Actually got something done - but I'll wait until it is recognisable ..

MY Escorts (and others) are here : http://www.dmmultimedia.com

Oh right.

Gotta say that Escort Mexico looks sweet (love my old Escorts)
not so sure about the Capri!! (although I did own a mint '80 1.6 auto Capri back in '99, prob the only 18 year old to own one outside of the 70's/80's!!)

Can't wait to see the M3 (did you notice it's got the wrong wheels on?)

This is what I got done last night. Just basically a very rough behind-the-scenes sketch of the front end - no details at all. Just getting a feel for the main flow and proportions. Will get the basic side profile right before sweeping it rearwards to create the flanks.

Been looking hard at my own car ... analysing how the curves flow. I will start to refine the actual shape. The front wing is quite tricky the way the sharp swage line joins into the smooth arch flare, and the wing curves to the front of the car (and the M is even more difficult with the cutout). There is also a slight undulation to the lower area below the swage, which itself changes from front wing to rear wheel arch.

Beginning to see my car like way they do in the Matrix - a big digital mesh.

But - the weekend lies ahead

Couple of hours last night ... trying to get the flowing curves right. This will take some time and a lot of going out to look at my own car.

I will get the basic overall shape correct before defining shut lines and detaching separate parts (doors/bonnet etc.).

impressive stuff Dave indeed !

I assume if you keep the original meshes it would be possible to change the finished render from an M3 to an e92 etc ?

In which case you would be able to add wheels and stuff for us ?

Don't suppose you want some hi res shots of my e93 do you.... ?(cheeky!)

Yes, what I usually do is create the base model and then create layers that contain interesting parts (M3 wings/Front bumper/rear bumper/Wheels). Then I can have fun switching 3D layers off and on, mixing and matching. Playing with paint finishes.

Creating Alloy wheels also takes time, but I will certainly do the M3 ones in the M3 brochure.

Think I will start with the E92 M3 body .. taking the roof off takes a bit of time, and requires a detailed interior ! But I can add my own SE bumpers/wings to the M3 shell. BY the looks of it the M Sport bumpers are not so different to the M3 ones.

Just a generic environment map, which is getting a little stretched along the side. I use a flat grey for modelling (same idea to using grey primer - helps show up undulations) and a shiny version to double check.

Lovely suny day here, but bloody parky out. So spent some time to get the roof up Bit wamer now.

Still very rough - lacking lots of definition and control of radii. That'll come later.

I don't even want to count. Probably a good few hours each day, and it'll take a couple of months (catching time when I can - weekends are good) to get it anywhere near good looking.

Spent until the wee hours last night trying to get that cut-out on the wings right. That was difficult to keep the mesh flowing smooth after cutting.

And started on the rear end. Getting a bit of definition into the boot lid. Ignore the ugly glitch - these are just aretefacts as I start to plan where to detach lights, boot, bumper etc. They'll be gone afterwards.

When I get the model developed further I'll post a 3D file (DWF) that can be viewed with a stand alone program (Autodesk Design Review).
