Differential noise?

How much differential noise do you guys get inside the car? I just started to notice this because I haven't been driving with the music on lately. I know what bad bearings sound like and this ain't it, but it does make more noise than I expected.

Iv'e noticed this in my newly aquired 2008 with 9k miles. I'm not farmilar with the 335 gearbox too much, but I can hear it in 1st and 2nd when driving. (almost sounds like when a car is in reverse, but much quieter)

So same question as you have.

No gear sound here after 80.000 km.

Do you have an LSD installed ?

when does it make noise? on the low gears? are you sure that it isn't your transmission that's going bad? I know in my car it makes a little whistling noise when I'm in gear and only when I'm in gear. I also sometimes have trouble putting it into second gear.

The problem only came after a company destroyed my transmission when trying to install a clutch and flywheel without knowing what they were doing and the end result was that they pained another company that was more familiar with the install and bought me a used transmission. I know the noise cant come from my differential because before they put a used tranny in my car I had to replace my diff because it had something loose inside that destroyed the diff so I had to buy a brand new diff.

+1 on source of noise. Unless you have a stethoscope w/ long tubes that you place on diff and on tranny it is really hard to tell. Have someone else drive car while you sit in backseat. !st & 2nd gear --> it is tranny, not diff.

I'm going to have to check out 1st and 2nd gear again, but I'm pretty sure it's the differential. I first noticed it at 100mph in 6th gear. Shifted into neutral and still heard the same sound - like reverse gear but quieter as dsswain said. No LSD yet - I definitely know what that sounds like. I miss my clunky KAAZ...

Just came back from some work away from home - checked out my car for the noise in 1st and 2nd and I can barely hear it. Like I said, the noise is there when I'm cruising at high speed even when the car is in neutral. Any ideas? Anybody?

record it and post it so we can hear it. Ive changed my diff before because it was bad. I remember a clanking like noise to me it sounded like it was coming for my drive shaft, but it was my diff that was bad and I had difficulty putting it into gear sometimes.

it could be clutch chatter! or a diff

same thing happened to me and dealer replaced both
