Vanos sensor

My vanos sensors are going out and i looked at tischer's site but they only have it labeled "Control valve solenoid", I need both the Intake and Exhaust solenoids. My question is are they the same, do i order two of the Vanos solenoids?

They are the identical. Before you order the new ones, try cleaning them first using a spray cleaner and switching them around i.e. exhaust to intake and vice versa. I learned that from Eninty in this forum (thanks go to him for that).

tried cleaning them and even sea foamed them but still causing problems. I also noticed my car has been smoking a lot through the exhaust and I'm assuming thats being caused by the solenoids but idk

From what I read, if you have bad VANOS solenoids and go WOT, it will give check engine light. Or get a BT Tool to scan for codes. You might want to pinpoint the problem before spending $200 on these parts. Yes the two solenoids are same.

i already got the codes, and I've been experiencing the check engine light and SES light, its just my car is also producing a lot of smoke so I'm wondering if thats the VANOS sensors.

The VANOS unit is covered under the California emissions warranty for 7yrs or 70k miles. Do you qualify for this?

What exactly were the codes?
Perhaps there are three possibilities- vanos solenoids gone bad since you already tried cleaning and swapping, camshaft sensor itself or fuse in the engine electronics box.

Well they're going out because I'm pushing more hp than stock and its wearing down the solenoids. I don't think i can get them replaced by BMW because the code rarely appears

They cost $100..i would just err on the side of caution and replace...as opposed to cleaning

Just went through a nightmare with mr. VANOS. I suspected correctly it was worse. In the end dealer performed oil change, both VANOS replaced, cam ledges replaced, and cleaned carbon build up. I then replaced the plugs since they didnt think it was necessary. All of this until codes stopped occurring good luck and I hope it is only VANOS.
