Most pumps in the US are rated at min 40. I think there are a few BP stations that sell premium diesel rated at min 49, but none in my area. The owner's manual recommends 50 and above, but the car will run just fine even on the 40. If you're worried or just anal (like me) you can use an additive like DieselKleen to boost the cetane and potentially improve engine life, as well.

1) Picked up the car Thursday and drove home (approx 30 minutes), ran a few errands later (another 30 minutes driving) 2) Left for the mountains on Friday. 2 hours, mostly interstate with some country back-roads. Rented a cabin. 3) Drove around some on Friday, and on Saturday, on various twisty mountain roads, visited a few different towns. Even drove on some gravel roads! 4) Drove from the cabin back into the main town, (20 minutes), then back to home (2 hours). 5) Went back out to go grocery shopping. Still on the original tank of Diesel from when I picked up the car!! I have about 70 miles remaining according to the computer and the fuel light just came on our way back from the store earlier.

Congrats and welcome to the club! You should notice the mileage really start to pickup once you get some good miles on the car. I continually get consumption and distance I could only wish for with my previous 335i.

Hey Thud, beautiful car, congrats!
What are your impressions of the car as compared to your 135i, including the switch from 6MT to auto? I am considering a 335d as well and would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! |

Nice Diesel, waiting to see when they'll offer a 335D XI Touring in Alpine White or Blue.
Performance and mpg in one car, I need to drive one to compare it to my old E90 330i. (Averaged 31mpg on hwy so the D should be better)

Overall the 135i feels more nimble and agile, but the 335d carries its weight very well and actually feels a bit more planted where the 135i can get jittery on rough pavement. My 1-er actually had more body roll too but I think that's been addressed somewhat in the 2011 1-series. Switching to non-runflats on the 135i really helped smooth out the jittery ride though. I spent last weekend driving through twisty mountain roads and it was every bit as engaging as the 135i. Yeah I lost the ability to row through the gears, but the locomotive-like torque pushing the car forward makes up for that. It just accelerates no matter what gear it's in. And the diesel makes happy noises... distinctly different from what I'm used to.

Damn it! That never happens to me! Perhaps it could have something to do with the two car seats in the back and the kids occaisonally riding in them. That's the best case scenario I suppose.

Thanks for the follow-up Thud. That helps to confirm my decision about making the switch. I'm just looking for the right options and deal.
