320i Engine covers off - Does this sound BAD? (Video Clip)
Today I was replacing the pencil coils after i had the Engine light on and it dropped on/off to 3 cyclinders, after i had replaced all 4 coils I decided to start it up and test it was all ok...
I don't know whether this is because the engine cover, rear cover, pollution filter etc was off but I was shocked to hear it sounds like a rattly bag of nails!!! Is this normal !!!!! Should I be worried!!!! I've put everything back together, is sounds a lot better and drives perfectly again.. The air-con may have also been switched on too. The rattly noise went after i took it to about 12k revs... Can anyone please comment? YOUTUBE LINK:

Sounds normal to me but then again ive never really heard a 320. Mine N52 sounds all clattery when I remove the engine cover as well. Oh by the way, did you mean 1200 revs and not 12k revs? Is the 320 a motorcycle engine? :-P

Perfectly normal for the N46 "diesel" motor. I replaced my pencil coils two weeks ago, also dropped one. Besides that I have the vacuum pump, tappet cover and eccentric shaft sensor oil leak, oh how I love this engine.
But it is light on fuel |
