As per Ginge, the jag would be the right call for me, but I'm stumbling on the performance:

XFR does 0-150 in mid 24's.
C63 with perf pack does it in 22's.

I'm expecting something a bit fast than the C63, not (albeit marginally) slower.

Yep, and the Jag just has the slush box...very smooth but not a DCT

Bit late joining this but that would be my guess as well and knowing how well Andrew can barter he could probably get this for around £40K

This is funny!

OK, I'll help a bit to give some of you a chance and then reveal all once Ilve had my supper!

It's NOT German - and most certainly not a ridiculous Audi with the entire engine hung in ahead of the front axle....no matter how fast or good that car could be...it just won't be my cup of tea.

Right then....that final quote of mine may have amused gizze but it sort of gives the game away. A pretty 'olde worlde' word for my new olde worlde car.

I'm amazed at how quickly some of you got it but given I've had most of what's in my budget thats any good, it doesn't leave a lot and, for the elephants in the room who appear to remember everything, yes I did nearly buy one 18 months ago. Along with the E63, it's probably the most capable all-rounder that I;ve driven, if not the most desirable thing to me.

So, Jaaaaaaaaag XFR it is. JJD in post number 3...you are the WINNER!

Ok the...so why the Jag? Well, the M3 had to go and choosing a replacement wasn't for easy a couple of reasons....I wanted something suitably 'different' and competent so I didn't miss the M3 too much (imagine getting one of those RS6's with it's 'straight line and nothing else' approach ....would have driven me potty after a few days!).

I considered all sorts, many of which have been mentioned from....

...Something very different like the Infinity G37 (too slow)...

...Another M5/6 (gearbox after the DCT would have driven me insane)...

...Vauxhall VXR8 Bathhurst S (quality?)...

...M3 4-door (couldn't afford one that would be as good as my current car)...

Another C63 (but it would still have a wobbly steering column like both previous one's I've had)

In the end, the Jag stood out as being the biggest bang for 'newish' car buck, it appears to drive easily as well as the E63 which I tend to hold in such high regard and it's super fast...OK, the stats maybe don't show it quite as quick as the C63 or M6 but I'd bet that the way the power is delivered (instantly and relentless at any RPM) would make it quicker in the real world. It's also just a mere few hundred quid away from 560+bhp with a simple remap and smaller supercharger pulley, should I feel the need

Do I like it? Well, I'm not exactly overly excited about it at present (not a great start, I know) but I'm warming to the idea of it and I'm sure all that instant and plentiful power will be great...until I get used to it and want more (at which point, 'more' is relatively cheap to come by ).

It's got great suspension; indeed, probably the most impressive thing is the handling/ride compromise which is as good as anything I can remember driving...on the 50 minute test drive, it coped extremely well with a typical rutted B-road and on the whole, I can't say a bad thing about the way it drove except it was a bit 'detached' - probably the weight doesn't help?

The build quality doesn't feel as substantial as the BMW or Mercs but this was more due to things like the switches and controls not feeling as 'tight'...nothing feels like it's going to fall off, it doesn't rattle and it's a nice design inside with a great driving position.

So, do I like it? I don't know....let's see. It's very nice and a lot of people would probably love to have it but I'm getting it because for my current needs, it's the most competent thing I reckon I can get at the minute (according to the world of Palmnuts anyway...I'm sure plenty would disagree and think it should be the big Audi)!

The car is a 2010 (10 plate) with 7k on the clock and up for £39k. It's lost £24k in 14 months and whilst I could have got one a lot cheaper, this one is low mileage and one owner - the cheapies at around £33-35k (yes, they are THAT low) have over 20k on the clock and 2-3 owners. They're also not in a Palmnut's friendly colour scheme...I've gone for a bright red one (got a thing for red cars at the minute) with Ivory interior and it looks very special when you open the door. The red at least distinguishes it from normal XF's as it's exclusive to the XFR.

Let's see how it goes and whether I warm to it or not....the guy in the Jag dealer must have been well confused as he'd probably never dealt with such a miserable and unenthusiastic XFR buyer but that did sort of make him work harder to out a deal together (it's amazing how hard salemen will try when they think you;re not interested or excited....I genuinely wasn't so he was coming out with all the stops - well worth remembering in future ).

I'll be sure to give a full write up on it when I've had it a few days but I wouldn't bother setting up a book on how long I'll keep it - I don't foresee me keeping it longer than I 'need' to but then who knows....this one might 'turn' me

Edit...I forgot to say in all the excitement about the car....it does sound bloody good, even compared to some of the stuff I've had. It has nice V8 rumble and the supercharger whine at high revs....YES, I liked that a lot! Most of the sound is outside though as it's very quiet inside (the supercharger is largely inaudible inside) so I can see windows being opened a lot!

The Bowers & Wilkins stereo too....well, if I'm honest, that was the deal clincher . Amazing for a car hi-fi. I'm sure there are far bigger experts than me on here who can tell me why it's a crap system (as is often the case when people speak about standard in-car hi-fi) but, to my ears, it was fabulous.

Interesting choice - but why change, just to release some cash or have work insisted on 4 doors?

Arses

I should have pressed submit without checking autotrader for alternatives

Do i get a consolation prize for correctly predicting it was the supercharged version

And btw, super choice old chap. Some think it's old mans, that's a bit of an old hat view, especially when we are talking about the R versions. The styling is bang up to date and whilst the brand has a typical old gentlemans image they have pulled something out the bag with the latest gen. These make a lovely grumble sound and the interior is absolutely top notch for a 40k car.

I hope you enjoy it!
