Propshaft flex disc

Anyone replaced one of these flex disc, donut, guibo things or whatever it is their called?
The one on my wife's 2006 120d is starting to perish slightly, so will therefore need replacing in the not to distant future.

Is this job easily doable on the drive with basic tools?
Does the exhaust need to be removed?

Will probably end up getting my mate to do it, but if its easy enough may have a go myself.

It's easy in theory, but separating it (where the propshaft is attached to the guibo) took a lot of muscle power on my car.

Out of interest what were the symptoms to encourage change of guibo/ centering bush / centering bearing? I'm guessing there were reasons rather than just changing for the sake of it?

centre bearing was a proper shake with gearstick wobbling like jelly,,the doughnot needed doing as it gave quite a thump when engaging/releasing clutch,,when the old one cam off it was quite easy to see it was knackered,,the centering bush was fine,,bit since id bought it ..fitted it,,ive read a couple of instances wheer the centering bush never vgot replaced, and they had to take everything off again to change a £7 part..s

Could you describe it a bit more? I have vibrations at around 2k RPM when accelerating. It started after my clutch/DMF change. I was in a rush when putting everything back and didn't examine the crankshaft. I had it out and not sure if I fitted it back incorrectly or something. Could it be because I didn't line it up correctly somewhere? A mechanic told me I had to make marks before removing so I put it back in exactly as it was due to balancing. Could that be true?

I think he meant propshaft not crankshaft.

But in answer to the question - yes the propshaft must be marked and put back together exactly the same as it was taken apart due to the balancing of it (from what I've been reading about it). If you don't then you are likely to suffer with vibrations which is what sounds like you may have done.

Thanks Nick, I did mean propshaft...

I guess I'll have to get under there again sooner rather than later. I have to replace the heatshields anyway.

Any ideas how to get the propshaft back how it was? It what.. 3 positions at one end and 3 at the other, that's 9 possible "combinations"?

I'll get under there and see if there are any marks there already from when they originally balanced. If not I'll just have to lift the rear end up whenever I have time and move the shaft one bolt over. And keep doing that until the vibrations go away.

Slightly OT but are you doing the heat shields because they’ve corroded near the bolt? I did mine yesterday, bought some heat shield material and made big “washers” to pull the heatsheld back nice and tight. And tight describes me, not spending money on new heatshields :-)

There are massive holes in them near the rear end of the car. After replacing the clutch/DMF we used big washers and stuff to fix it up a bit but when started driving there was a lot of noise that turned out to be the heatshields banging up and down. I had a mechanic look at it and he bent them somewhat to stop the noise. But I'm thinking of sourcing second hand ones but in good condition off eBay and trying to do the job properly.

I used to have a vibration through the car when I floored it at low RPM’s so though my donut was gone but since fitting polybush inserts in the subframe mounts it’s gone away.
