They tell you to support local but seriously ever time I think I will get something locally I can't justify getting ripped off that hard. |

You need to find a local dealership that has a price match policy on genuine BMW parts. My local dealership will price match or at the very least get close enough to any OS price (part plus shipping cost) I can prove. I have successfully done that for many of the smaller items I have required, incl maintenance stuff. All you may need to do is ask.

So I just got around to booking mine in to get fitted.
Dropped it in Tuesday morning, rang back at 4pm Tuesday afternoon and told it was ready to go. $335 total cost, labour + diff oil to fit my LSD. Mine is the early 2007 bolted differential, so I believe it involves removing everything, unbolting, reassembling and then refitting everything back up to the car. I thought it was a very reasonable price to fit it. I have since only driven direct from the workshop to work this morning on the freeway, so I can't yet comment on the LSD. I did notice however that there was a slight jolt when I brake slowly and then reapply throttle (jolts from deceleration to acceleration) which I did not feel with open differential. I have to drive it some more and test to see whether it is really a problem. |

At last. Another review from a recent local install. Keep the feedback coming. Any others?

Hey Scotty, thats an awesome price.
Did you supply bearings, seals or snap ring shims? I contacted a few installers and some said yer no problem we will put it in. But one installer who I am using said I need shims. Typically they make these but BMW use snap rings and the only snap rim shim kit I can find is $US200 and the shipping is $US160 !! Did your installer say anything about shims? The reason I was told was the backlash and fit needed to be accurately set with the shims and they would not attempt to do without it. I am very keen to get this installed but this is proving to be a big hold up. I got the bearings from MFactory and the seals from ECS and thought I was good to go but sadly not |

As I said above, I've only driven 50km or so (posting this at work), and I noticed twice on the way to work that the car jolted slightly when transitioning from gently braking to acceleration. I did not notice this prior to the install. I am wondering if this is the tolerances having not been set correctly. I supplied the pinion seal + output shaft seals, but did not supply bearings. The workshop said prior to accepting the job that sometimes bearings need to be replaced and they would be happy to source the parts if they were required. My car has only done 96,000 and they said it wasn't necessary to replace them. Apparently the install was really easy, everything came out and went back in as planned... but then again I'm not sure about whether any thought was given to shims or tolerances. The shop that installed it specializes in 4 x 4 and performance tuning, so I figured if anyone has experience with differentials, it would be a 4x4. Who knows? |

The general consensus seems to be that these are needed to eliminate the backlash that Scotty seems to be experiencing. Also seems to be that we should choose an installer who knows of this issue and will set the tolerances correctly. Group buy on shims maybe? |

Good idea! The only issue is the nature of these GB's is they can take months.
I told my builder that he can use Holden parts or cant he make them. His response was normally yes they do make their own however the BMW is a circlip or snap ring which is very different and specialised. I have contacted several places in Aus that do circlips and snap rings and they said they get asked this all the time. They dont supply them but if they had the spec sheet for them they would make them up. There is a picture of them in this article here and I have contacted the author to ask where he got them from but no reply as yet. I also contacted the supplier I found and I asked if I could organise my own shipping which he was happy to do but as yet I cant find a carrier much cheaper. They are all US$150 or higher. EDIT: I also noted if I did local ground shipping to Cali then the shipping was $9 !! I am now looking into the 3rd party sites that ship international for you like Cuzin and others. WTF a pair of those shims wouldn't wouldn't weigh more than a kg each. Can you ask him to use USPS express? I'm sure he will bother to take them to the post office if we buy five sets

The shim kit comes with 20 rings of various sizes as each fitment is apparently marginally different.
The parcel is 7in x7in x7in and weighs 4lbs. The quoted US$160 is USPS ! |

So... This LSD is fucking mental.
Just went for lunch and thought it would be a good idea to try DTC on slightly wet roads. The car wanted to spin right around at less than 20kmh. I couldn't hve been much higher than 1500rpm and the whole lot got totally crossed up. Clearly DTC wasn't doing any yaw correction whatsoever. My tyres are brand new (less than 150km's) so I'm going to put it down to greasy tyres not yet worn in. Atleast I hope it's just new tyres, otherwise I'll probably have to sell the LSD. It just wanted to skate everywhere with no throttle at all. Made my heart start beating so violently I thought I was going to bust an artery. Fuck me. Totally fucking scared now. |

Geez hope you're ok Scotty. Doesn't sound very good. 150kms would have cleared any grease off new tires for sure. New tyres should perform immediately otherwise manufacturers would make themselves liable for any accidents.
Could it be possible the LSD was somehow installed incorrectly?! Quote:

Holy crap Scotty that sounds intense!
Hopefully it's something that sorts itself out soon. Is it repeatable?

The first issue would be a backlash problem, probably a result of it not being shimmed properly.
For the second issue, that should not be happening at all. The LSD doesn't affect the DTC, it actually enhances it. Do not keep driving like this. I would take it back to your installer to check. The backlash is worrying |

hey guys just an update from me...
i have officially given up on getting new bearings - i was looking for the carrier (x2) and pinion (x2) bearings for both my 335i and my 130i lsd installs .. but everyone i contact (diffsonline, mfactory, few places in the UK) is either out of stock of wants to charge 250USD or 200GBP for _each_ of the 335i carrier bearings - so f* it, i'm just going to re-use my old bearings. with regard to shims, well... i hope my installer knows about the circlip 'thing' because he seems confident he can re-use shims from other cars... but from what i'm reading here it's not that simple. i'll check with him he knows that they are circlip style and post back. just waiting on seals and axle nut from ecs... |

Guys - Replacement of the bearings is not necessary at all. From my research before having an LSD installed in mine, all information indicated that the bearings do not require replacement. Fortunately my LSD supplier included axle seals, the only thing advisable to use new.
It is critical that your installer knows how to set the correct backlash tolerance, which is most likely Scotty's problem. Detailed installation instructions downloadable from Birds UK (for Quaife that probably applies to all LSDs in our cars) says (quoted): Crown-wheel tangential clearance (drive pinion backlash) should be checked with a dial gauge according to BMW procedure. It should not be necessary to adjust with shims. BMW tolerance for a new differential Backlash 0.06 mm to 0.14 mm. (0.0024 to 0.0055 in.).
