So i don't have all the details on what changed or if it is still okay to use in your car any more??? But from what i know, since Nov 2015... Mobil 1 0w-40 euro is NO LONGER BMW LL-01 approved.

Their website still shows the old bottle details that have BMW listed and LL-01 approval:

I wonder what changed in the oil?
Is it still safe for the n54?
Do they just need to recertify with BMW?

Castrol Edge 0w-40 is still LL-01 approved tho.

I would send an email to Mobil1 and ask. I have emailed them in the past about things and they are pretty responsive.

yes, they confirmed in email that it is no longer LL-01 approved since Nov 15th, 2015

I just bought some M1 the other day and the bottle still listed BMW LL-01 on the label...

I have always used M1 on all my vehicles and have sold all my vehicles with well over 200k miles. Whether or not M1 is BMW approved i will continue to use it because its top quality oil.

It very well could be that M1 no longer wanted to pay liscensing fees to BMW. Or now that BMW has switched to Shell/Pennzoil their contract may stipulate that BMW cannot recommend any other oils. Money talks i suppose.

I doubt M1 would change the oil and risk losing LL-01. I'm guessing BMW changed the spec, perhaps for their newer models, and M1 no longer meets it. It's still the same oil. This is just my guess. Best to email them and get the details.

I suspect it must be old inventory, my walmart has the new bottles that have no wording of "BMW" or "LL-01"

I bought mine at Walmart since they apparently have the best deal in the world on M1. But yea probably still old inventory.

Anyway... I will forever continue to use M1 in my BMW no matter what.

What if they change the formula to syrup and try to run Aunt Jemima out of business. Would you then use M1 on your pancakes or in your engine or possibly both!?

Did you read the BITOG thread I linked in that other Mobil 1 thread?

Basically they changed what the base stock oil is, so now it's a different formulation. If you want to get technical, the previous M1 0w40 was a PAO and Visom (Group III) based oil. The new M1 FS 0w40 is a PAO and GTL oil. GTL is gas to liquid, as in made from natural gas like what Shell/Pennzoil has been marketing as its PurePlus technology.

The question we don't have an answer to is if the new formula flat out doesn't meet BMW LL-01 at all anymore, or if ExxonMobil just haven't gotten it approved by BMW yet.

Basically, the oil has not been tested to be as sheer-stable over the long 15K change interval. M1 0-W40 (and pretty much any other oil) is completely fine if changed early on all of our engines.

Don't let the LL-01 fool you. I personally either use dealer oil, or Castrol 0-W40.

Don't get me wrong... I use Mobil 1 since the 90's on all my cars. I love using the 0w-40 Euro in the n54. I just want to make sure that I can safely use the new 0w-40 euro flavor in my n54 for about 7500 miles (Otherwise we are going to need to make an uproar to get 0w-40 euro "Classic" formula made)

Did some hunting on BITOG and it seems like the consensus is there's some minor changes to the oil formulation which shouldn't significantly impact the quality of M1 if you're following the shorter OCI that I'm sure most of us do.

Personally, I was debating switching to Rotella T6 or something fancier, but I think I'll stick with M1. I haven't seen evidence that switching to any of the higher priced oils makes enough of a difference vs the cost, especially if you're not waiting 15,000 miles to change.

I don't think a small change in the oil formula will hurt regardless if BMW no longer approves M1 0W-40 Euro formula. Mobil has always produced high quality oils and lubricants and improved them to keep up with continuous changes in engine technology. Most likely what you probably get is a more improved M1 0W-40 so you'll be fine using it in your older model 335i.

I suspect the same thing... I just wish M1 was more outgoing and could say something along those longs to us in email or on their site. I would have to say pretty much any recently bottled 5w-30/0w-30/5w-40/0w-40 oil that is Synthetic... should be fine in our motors even without the LL-01 label, I just like some kind of assurance some place that says so.

I would say still safe to use it and just like jt335i said I guess oil is improved. I will still use it..
