Position pin is stuck hillbilly fix--drill a hole

My mirror pivoted all the way forward because the pin was stuck like in the first linked video; no reset method helped.
As an experiment, I drilled down through the outer potmetal casting to expose the spring and hole shown in that video from the top without having to separate the mirror parts. I used a very small bit first but missed the hole, so I had to drill a little bigger to expose about half the spring. I could then flush it with degreaser and add dry graphite lubricant (sticky is bad here imo). I then covered the hole with aluminum tape, tested it (a lot), and put the mirror cap back on. So far so good--my mirrors fold in and out correctly and no drilling out / welding.

I will post a pic of where to drill the hole... I took a stab based on the video, but with the hole in my mirror now you can get closer.

That would be great if you could post your photo. I'm going to probably attempt something to fix my mirror in a week or so, because it keeps going past its stopping position. I'd rather not drill and weld like the video shows, but I could if it comes down to it

I wrote up a quick DIY with photos and "correct" drill location. Let me know how it goes!

Reviving old thread, after reading almost all the earlier posts…

Driver mirror body continues to annoyingly fold forward, even after making sure pin moves freely. Folds and remains forward after vehicle is turned off, when opening trunk and when using power fold button. No fault codes. Mirror glass adjusts fine. Pulled connectors, no corrosion. Unsuccessful with multiple reset options, and attempts to find design “zero” point. Passenger mirror and mirror body work perfectly !

Is there a software upgrade, or, is this another software “glitch” ?

It's not software as you probably noticed from the thousand and one threads related to all of the hardware fixes over the years people have attempted and come up with.

FRM mods for folding mirror

PS10828
Build date 9/2005

Thanks for reply and link. I believe I have your referenced "Comfort Closing Folding Outside Mirrors" feature. For ex, if I stop and fold the mirrors in, with the button, and then start driving, the mirrors will automatically fold out when i reach 20-25 mph. Driver forward folds, pass returns to normal.

Recently discovered that if I fold the mirrors in before turning the car off, they will remain in the folded position, even after restarting the car. Previously, if I left the mirrors in the normal position and shut off the car, driver mirror would noisily fold and clunk forward after ~ 10 minutes, and/or, would also fold forward if I opened the trunk. I could manually pull the mirror back to normal, but it would annoying refold forward for another "round" or two, then it would give up.

So, now, I fold mirrors in, before turning off vehicle. I restart, drive with mirrors still folded in, watch them fold out at 20-25 mph, and then roll down window and move driver mirror to correct position. This seems to avoid undesirable forward fold, and eventual damage to the plastic mirror cover (which keeps getting unlatched/loose, and I have to snap/reattach).

I reviewed Owner's Manual, and do not see an option to activate mirror folding on engine turnoff...

Regarding the FRM, I don't show any codes on my Bavarian Tech. Activation of mirror fold feature works. I know the long time Tech Specialist at my local BMW dealer, and we discussed this issue . I previously mentioned FRM, and he kinda winced. He said every time he's attempted FRM modifications on the "older" BMWs, it creates another malfunctioning (FRM controlled) component. He agreed to research with BMW Engrg, Germany..

So, at this point, I'm not ready to use NCS to disable.....but certainly would appreciate any other suggestions.

Mechanically, the mirrors operate normally. Garaged, live in the South, no corrosion. Used penetrant and lubricated the mechanism. The pin moves freely.

Thanks for your help.

I have a different folding mirror problem. The drivers side mirror extends about an inch past where it's supposed to stop. I tried all the tricks, lots of spray lube, drilling a hole, spraying more. The pin engages just fine but for some reason the motor keeps rotating out past where it's supposed to stop.

I got a good mirror assembly at the junk yard however it was from a E92 which is different. I thought they were the same but the mounting holes are different. All the sedan mirrors at the junk yard were broken just like mine. I am thinking of manually forcing it to stop in the correct place then tack welding it and disconnecting the motor for the folding mechanism.

I had the same issue with my e90 like twice already. . I replaced it with another used mirror. You can disable the mirror folding mechanism by cuting the white wire. You have to open the rear mirror lid.
