Progressive springs are springs that have an increasing spring rate under load. This happens when the springs are positioned closer together and come in contact under load, increasing their stiffness as the car enters cornering.

Progressive spring rate means that the springs will get stiffer as they become more compressed. What this translates into is a stiffer, sportier ride during spirited driving yet soft enough for normal driving. This is opposed to single rate springs that only have one constant compression rate.

thanks nick for the response. I would imagine that just about all quality coilovers have a progressive setup no? do all coilovers get much stiffer when you lower the car more, what things should I look out for so I dont sacrafice the ride quality too much after increasing the drop on the coilover?

Right, most coilover setups are progressive but you want to make sure before purchasing. The stiffness/ride quality mainly comes from shock adjustment (dampening) but ride quality in relation to ride height is highly dependent on the kit.
