Oil level problem

Hi, all

I had my car serviced just over a month ago, and since the oil has been changed, the following has happened:

First couple of days, oil level green and "ok"
Then it went yellow and "oil level too high"
Spoke to garage, they said let it settle after another 100 miles or so
Drove another 100 miles or so
Back to green and "ok"
Thought that was the end of it
2 weeks later, it snowed, back to yellow and "high"
Put it down to extreme temperatures
100 or so miles later, back to green and "ok"
Fine for a week or so
Today, after not driving the car for around 2-3 days, it's back to yellow and "high".

What seems to be happening here? I've contacted the garage again today and it's booked in for Thursday to see if they can sort it out.

Probably just a dodgy oil level sensor.

Have you been looking at the dipstick?? This is a far better indicator than Idrive!

Just went out and checked the dipstick, it currently shows as a little bit over max.

Is this a big issue? I mean, it must just be on the cusp of tripping the sensor? Am I doing damage driving it currently? I've driven it about 1000 miles since the oil change.

If it's only a little, I wouldn't worry too much. Easy to rectify this, either suck some oil from the dipstick hole with an oil scavenger pump if you have one, or just drain a little from the sump.

Or go back to the garage that did your oil change and get them to do it, and remind them you won't be paying g as it was their mistake for over filling it.

i ahve a syphon suction pump which i do oil changes with and would be easy to atke some out with it,,but if i were you id get a turkey baster with a tube attached and stick it down the dipstick and extract some oil,,its probably ok,but to much oil can get sucked into air intake etc...garahe sounds incompetent to me

+1. Not exactly a hard job to do an oil and filter change. They were probably in a rush and over filled it instead of running the car and adjusting the level. Bet they didn't even change the filter or the drain plug gasket.

And as to the advice let it settle of 100 mile!?! thats one way to bust your engine

Is it happening when you are on an incline?
In the 335i the level sensor is near the firewall at the back of the engine. On a downhill slope it'll sometimes say it's too low. Never had it say it's over full but the 335i with the twin turbos probably lose oil a bit faster. The idrive in a 335i only monitors the last 1 litre of oil. So too low is 1 litre down on what it requires.

if it's only a little bit over, take your filter out, empty it and put it back in. That'll get rid of about 50ml of oil.
