No filter cap leak on mine. Its from the housing. It's oem filter and all servicing has been done at a bmw dealer. Do you know if they change the o rings while changing oil filter at dealer? I was thinking of renewing the o rings if dealer doesn't replace them at every service.

Try trace where the oil is coming from. If its from the top cap - chance are its the O-ring.

If from the base, then youre screwed!

Oil leak is fixed by replacing gasket. Afterleaving the shop, into 10 minutes of driving, I get an engine fault sign and loss of power. Took the car back to workshop and right now the car is getting diagnosed. Fml!

mine isn't leaking as much as yours but there's a seap coming from where the black filter meets the housing. (alo bit). I can see it clearly. I am getting mine changed in 3 weeks with a new oil filter. too long to wait?

Diagnosed completed. A small and thin hose feeding air into engine and a thick radiator hose above the fan had a leak thanks to wear and high running temperatures of this engine. Pretty disappointed but in a way I feel lucky that it occurred close to the workshop and whatever decided to give up on the car failed all in one bang, that way I don't need to worry about random things failing on the car after I bring it home. Total bill $400 incl. oil leak problem. Picking up the car tomorrow after extensive testing and hose replacements. Warning to all 335I owners, beware and replace all worn out looking hoses under bonnet because this engine runs very hot and this car is only on 75000 kms. Update will be added after tomorrow afternoon. Let's hope nothing else fails after pick up.

Not long but don't drive the car until then. Also check the coolant for any signs of dirt.

Tech said that gasket inside oil housing was worn out hence why it was leaking through the gap. Small fix. Said it was a minor leak and he'd seen much worst. Common problem with bmws he added not only 335s. A change necessary very 75 to 80k kms.

If you have to drive it, I suggest you get it looked within a week, not 3 weeks. Leak can get worst and do further new damages.

Car is back to normal and running strong again. Brought her back home yesterday and took the piece with me that failed. I'll take a photo of it and post it up. Overall happy. Wanted to drive it today but it's raining. Standard Melbourne.

My oil filter housing has been leaking as well. I've installed Advan oil cooler with stock thermostat delete and there was oil leaking between the new backing plate and the oil filter housing itself. Wasn't too bad until one day the backing plate gave way because one of the bolts that secures it to the housing was stripped inside. Pulled over immediately and topped up with oil until I was able to seal it off securely. Also checked my coolant and found a lot of oil in there as well. Seems like the seal has 'eroded' between the block and the housing and the new backing plate and the housing. Going to replace the entire housing so the bolt screws in and I've got fresh seals as well. Labour will be expensive though.

Your situation appears to be a little worse than mine and I'm sorry to hear about it. I'm assuming your housing has been damaged including the seal/gasket inside. Beware, the common problem is the gasket erroding and not the actual housing failure. Maybe you'll get lucky and find out that it's only the gasket. The gasket/seal must've eroded so much that it mixed in to your coolant. I saw the oem replacement seal and it's thin as fcuk. Basically like a plastic rubber band you would flick towards your classmates back in your early school days. it's actually very thin. Seeing how thin the new seal was, it's really not surprising for the old one to erode with time and the heat. Because of this, the seal only lasts up to 75 to 80k kms with good care. if I was in your situation, and had to replace the housing too, I would've had to couged up another $500-600. If the dealer had to fix it instead of a specialist, I would've paid another $1000 incl labor. Hope it gets fixed soon and make sure you flush the coolant after housing and gasket gets replaced. And this is a must make sure you get the pressure released(from the coolant) after the new coolant additives are added, get them to do a pressure test for the coolant(they use a special tool for this) and run the heater and fan on high for about 20 minutes while driving it home after you picking her up (for healthy circulation).

Well, I've just hit 80k and as if right on queue - I noticed a few drops of oil around the filter.

I know an aftermarket filter was used so will check that first..

The oil leak around the oil filter housing is really common now with a lot of cars up around the 70+km.

The oil gets so hot in these engines that over time the rubber type Orings go hard and no longer seal.

The cost to repair is not to bad so dont worry to much, we can do this repair while you wait.

can anyone tell me what the heat exhanger gasket is ?

I have replaced the oil filter gasket and its still leaking so i presume it wasnt replaced propely or its the heat exhanger gasket ???
