Do you just go to map 0 where the pbx is "off" or do you just remove it?

They don't physically check the ecu at all?

I advise all my customers to leave it in for routine maintenance, and take it out for power-train warranty work. But if you are really paranoid then you can just remove it all the time.

Like mentioned above it is diagnostically invisible so the only way BMW could find it is if they went into the ECU compartment.

What would prompt them going into the ecu box? Reflahshing?

No reflashing is done via the OBD diagnostic port. The short answer is they never go into the ECU compartment.
